"The government... wants to motivate you to get rid of your clunker of a car (http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/37337) for the good of the country (and the moribund car industry). A 'Cash for Clunkers (http://feinstein.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=NewsRoom.PressReleases&ContentRecord_id=d6137935-0a4f-1ab7-ddb4-8a1760ea170c)' measure introduced this week by three US Senators, two Democrats and a Republican, would set up a national voucher program to encourage drivers to voluntarily trade in their older, less fuel-efficient car, truck, or SUV for a car that gets better gas mileage. Should the bill pass, the program would pay out a credit of $2,500 to $4,500 for drivers who turn in fuel-inefficient vehicles to be scrapped and purchase a more fuel-efficient vehicle."

only difference is that one appears to be out and out giving people cash, where as Ron Paul's bill is a tax credit.

hopefully this doesn't pass....we don't need to be giving away more money

Hmmm. Go out and buy those old Yugos for cheap.

Kind of like those great "gun buy-backs" where they have "no questions asked". You can actually turn in broken airsoft guns and use the money for more ammo.

Yeah, I like to fuck the state.

Sure get rid of your old car and replace for it a new car with GPS tracking, that lets the cops track you ever were you go.

i like my old peice of shit minivan.

The seatbelt doesnt beep at me when i dont feel like putting it on.

Theres no bullshit adaptive braking.

No built in GPS for the cops to track.

And no paying full coverage.

Once again the goverment can kiss my ass because im driving my old peice of shit as long as i can. After that i will likely buy another old peice of shit.

No what? In order to get ANY money for the one vehicle I DO have that they would MAYBE take- a 1976 Chevy centennial with less than 60,000 original miles that purrs like a kitten I paid $100 for (has to be less than 18 mpg, and cannot find out at all what it gets, and have not tested that) is worth way more than they would give to buy a used vehicle...I would never buy used and pay a note, and we have no public transportation out here. (This truck is sitting until we run the everyday one into dust)

They would never buy the one truck we would actually get rid of- the one we use on a regular basis- a 1995 ford ranger (which we have about $200 dollars invested into).

Secondly, after finding out who is behind it...I don't want anything to do with it. I know I will be gypped.

I would rather keep my old trucks. Sorry.

The government has run similar programs before. The last time it was to try to get older, more polluting cars off the road to try to clean up the air.

Probably only good for new cars.

1. Helps collapsing auto industry
2. Puts people in more debt (the American way)
3. Helps banks who get to finance the new cars
4. We get to print even more money and pass on even more debt to our kids!!!

If it's not a tax credit it will probably be taxable income to boot.

Great little arbitrage opportunity here.

only if you think it's morally ok to get/accept/take public money.
