View Full Version : Computer audio and video stuttering

I am about at my wits end trying to figure this out.

From time to time my computer audio skips and stutters, it happens alot when listening to mp3s, and when watching videos the audio and video both stutter. As far as I can tell its not a issue of using too much CPU, I have tried keeping the other programs closed with no luck.

One thing about it that is really funny, if I start rapidly maximizing and minimizing windows, the problems stops immediately, and then starts again as soon as I stop.

This kind of crap goes on for about 45 minutes or so, then stops for a long time, then resumes with no apparent pattern.

I have run a virus scan and spyware and this did not solve it.

I did run a diagnostic program, and this message seemed to coincide with the problem:

5:34:44.7960210 AM Explorer.EXE 688 RegQueryValue HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Linka ge\Bind BUFFER OVERFLOW Length: 144

Any idea what might be the problem?

I took a look at it, but I'm not sure how this relates to the problem?

not sure exactly what this is? what do I do about it, is that program something to fix it?

Are you using Vista?

I had this problem a little while ago. Something about Vista not being able to converse with the Realtek and WLAN drivers. The only solution was to either cut off wifi access, or leave Vista behind.

I I've bounced between Ubuntu and XP and neither seem to have this problem

Is this a new problem or something you've always dealt with?

Perhaps your video card is slowing you down. Do you have any type of visualization going on with your mp3s?

If you disable your audio driver (Control panel [you'll probably need to switch to "classic" mode [ought to be an option on the left sidebar of the Control Panel window] since the naming is different by default] -> "System" -> "Hardware" tab -> "Device Manager" -> expand "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" -> locate your audio driver [should have realtek, AC97, Creative, Sigmatel, and/or Analog Devices in the title] -> right click the driver and disable it) and play a video with sound (ignore the "you do not have an audio driver enabled" warning), do you still have a stuttering problem? (if this doesn't fix the problem, right click and enable the driver)

If the above solves your problem, it is indeed your sound "card" which is having the problem. You may be able to solve this by disabling hardware acceleration (Control panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> "Advanced" under "Speaker Settings" -> "Performance" tab -> slide both tabs all the way to the left ["none"] -> "Apply"). If you still have problems after this, be sure to go back and change these settings back. If this did solve the problem, find out what your audio driver is called, and do a google search for an updated driver and see if installing that fixes your problem, at which point you can re-enable acceleration and maximum audio quality.

If you still had a problem after disabling your audio driver, then.... it isn't your audio driver ;) It may be that your RAM is insufficient or your CPU is too slow or unstable. If you're still having problems, download AnVir (20 day trial) (http://www.anvir.com/downloads/taskpro.exe) and check out your stats. Click on the "Processes" tab, and sort them by "Memory Usage". Is something taking up more than it ought to? Sort by CPU% and Disk Load as well, just to be sure a program isn't doing something it ought not to. AnVir color codes its statistics so you know if something is taking up more resources than average programs. Also check toward the bottom-center of the screen and see what % of your memory is being used. If over 90% is being used, it's probably time for a RAM upgrade. Your system's performance may also be enhanced if you increase your "pagefile" allotment (essentially a kludge for PCs without enough RAM for their needs). To increase your pagefile allotment, go Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> "Settings" (under "Performance") -> Advanced -> "Change" (under "Virtual Memory") -> click the "Custom Size" radio button and enter an initial size of 2048 mb., and a maximum of 4096 mb., and click "Set". This does take out hard drive free space from your computer, so a minimum of 4gb should be free prior to setting this.

Are you using a laptop with any kind of throttling?

Disable the superfetch service if your using vista.

I tried adjusting the hardware acceleration with no luck. This is a problem I originally had with Vista, which was why I switched to XP, and that cleared up the problem. But I had a problem that caused me to install a different XP and the problem came back.

I have been poking around the net and some people have had a simliar problem caused by realtek audio drivers conflicting with the wifi card and suggest disabling 802.11a band to fix it, but I can't find that option in the windows network settings.

I managed to capture this in process monitor right when the problem was happening, I don't know if it means anything
