I know I shouldn't be posting this in grassroots central, but, well, I am kind of stressed out right now, so hopefully you can understand.

My dad left my mom yesterday for some younger chick he has, apparently, been having an affair with for four years. He doesn't make much money, has always been in and out of jobs (he has worked less time than he hasn't since I have been around), and he has left us without enough money for rent and other utilities since my mom's disability insurance has run out (last month too). My mom's family can help for a while, but I really want to help out and was wondering if anyone had any jobs I could do in the SW Washington area. I have looked up some stuff on the internet, but not very much of it looks like a sixteen-year-old type work (most of it was hourly sales, and the stuff that wasn't was across town and I'd probably spend a good chunk of the money I made on gas to get there). If any of you guys can help out by giving me a job, it would be much appreciated. I am sixteen and a half, a Ron Paul supporter, I'd work hard for you, and could handle most jobs you can give me as long as it doesn't interfere with school too much (my schedule is flexible since I am in Running Start and go to the local JC instead of HS for my classes).

Thank you in advance for letting me post this in advance, despite the fact it has nothing to do with the grassroots.

Set up a chip-in and I will drop you some. i know that this community came together to help me get my brothers funeral. I would be honored to pay it back by helping someone else in need. even if its just a bit

This. I don't imagine you could find a job to pay you as much as us. :p

I wish I lived in SW Washington, I'd hire you for sure. I'm sorry to hear about your dad.

I'd be happy to chip in also. Actually, if you'd like, I could also help you with a job application/resume. This would probably be your first job I imagine, so maybe not so much on the resume front, but if you'd like me to proof or help with an application or cover letter, let me know. I have a bit of experience in the area.

And I think this is an example of exactly what grassroots central should be about.

Hang in there Nate! My Dad did the same thing when I was about your age-(I'm 43 now with a wife and 2 kids of my own). I know it can be tough and you are doing right by asking for some assistance. But remember this too shall pass and in the long run it will all work out.

Please do not take offense but when I had this experience I went out and just scrapped jobs as I could from the neighborhood and small shops in the area (yards, car cleaning, house cleaning, etc.)- not sure if this is possible for you.

But if so and you can earn a reputation as a solid worker, I bet you will get about as much employment as you can handle. Keep your chin up.

Great advice!!! I'm another older person.

My dad didn't leave but he did lose his job when I was a teenager and money was tight with 8 kids. So we all got jobs. There was a time that I had 3 part time jobs at once, and I paid my own way through college; no loans, no grants no scholarships, no money from the folks.

Slinging hash at the local fast food joint or busing tables may not be fun, glamourous, or your life-long goal but it's a job and they'll usually hire 16 year olds. Also consider stocking shelves or warehouse work, mowing lawns, helping old folks clean out their garages or other odd jobs.

Trust me, the advice wd4freedom has given is EXCELLENT! Earning a rep as a solid worker will pay off down the line--many of these people will gladly write recommendations for you and you never know, the networking you develop may land you a job that you'd really want.

The fact that you did not ask for money, but instead asked for work, speaks loads for your character. If I was located in Washington I'd hire you just for your attitude, since of family obligation and ability to reach out to others for an honest chance.

I have a gut feeling that you will go far in life.:)

I'm in on the chip in.:)

You guys rock. I'm in for the chip in as well. If you drive I know teenagers in my area who hooked up with the area agency on aging and got employment running errands for shut ins. You'd get to meet a lot of cool people. Hang in there.

Check for local horse boarding facilities. They can always use a good able-bodied guy to help out with chores -- especially this time of year.

If you know where the day laborers normally hang out, go there and hustle a bit, as you'd get temporary work and get paid cash ($80-$100/day depending on work). You could also do the sign waving thing, if it isn't too cold. Or as someone suggested, there are more and more seniors that need help doing some chores. They'd pay you for the help, but you need to let them know you're available to work.

My mom told me to setup a chipin (http://www.chipin.com/mywidgets/id/828334cad9871db2), I set it up for $500 because that will pretty much cover all my books and school supplies, which will help a lot because we legally don't qualify for their aid until any settlement came through (probably not even then). Thanks a lot for your help, and I'll go check out a couple of those places you mentioned, I also went over to the college and went to the job board and hopefully they'll take me for a tutoring job for the HS across the street that pays $11/hour (already checked snagajob, first place that comes up on a Google search, that is where I found the cross town jobs).

Worse comes to worse, I'll go back over to my high school and ask the career counselor or the regular counselor where I could go after I called the meetup organizer, because I know a couple of people own businesses in the meetup.

Thank you guys so much, I don't know why it says it has raised zero, because we have got around 10 contributions, I think all are $25. Thanks Kludge, I'll send y'all e-thank you notes.

Edit: of the monies received, $25 has actually wound up in the paypal account. I just setup the account today for my mom, and it looks like the rest of them have to go to a verified account, which we'll get done whenever that $1 paypal bank account deposit ends up there. Thanks again.

Really, feel sorry for my mom the most right now.

I think because my dad was doing this for so long, it was dragging down our house with the evil. As soon as he left yesterday, I felt like a wholly different person. I mean, I knew what was right, and I knew that being lazy like I was is wrong. I "wanted" to get a job, but I didn't care enough to go look around. He left, I knew what to do, how to do it, and for once, I am actually going to do it. I feel kind of liberated in a sense.

Good luck finding the job

As others have noted, I think it speaks volumes about your character that you did not ask for a hand-out but rather asked for a job

I'm a jobless college student, but I will contribute what small amount I can. By the grace of liberty and a strong spirit, you and your family will get through this

God bless

maybe that's why it is showing ZERO as the amount donated...because all the contributions were after the expiration...

I did the auto 30 days, so it technically hasn't expired. I think it might be because the paypal account hasn't been verified as of yet. If not, I'll just send back the money to anybody who donates any more.

Well Nate dad sounds like an asshole. You seem like a decently cool guy so I'm kinda sorry I'm sure it fucking sucks. My family had a nasty divorce before college with an affair and all so I guess atleast someone else here has had a modern family values experience. I'd contribute money but it looks like you got some already. I don't got a job and I'd have to look into getting my paypal working so that'd take some time anyway. But just keep updating you should be able to find a job, it's probably not easy but a family can survive on one income as well. If it keeps getting worse I'll see what I can do about contributing as well.

I've set up a chip in and paypal at the same time before. It's a pain in the ass. It will take about 5 business days for the verification deposit to appear in your bank account. Once you get it verified you can accept the payments and they will start showing up in your chip in.

Expect a call from the people at Payal in the next couple days. When they see all the deposits coming in they will get suspicious and call asking you a bunch of questions like you are up to no good.

Also, remember that paypal and chipin both take a cut out of your money. So if you raise $500, expect to only get something like $450.

And on another note, my mom had an affair and left my dad when I was two years younger than you. I know how tough it can be. Hang in there though. I think you have the right attitude to deal with this.

I'll make sure to tell my mom that. They might not get around to it for a couple more days because of the New Year.

I think I'll pull through. Like I said in an earlier post, it is my mom who needs the thoughts and prayers the most right now. The three other people I fell sorry for the most in this whole mess is my grandmother on my dad's side because my dad was her last child to have not been through a divorce or be gay, and the two little girls (5 & 8) of the woman he had the affair with. They are going to need prayers to, because apparently their dad divorced their mom earlier because she was seeing my dad a few years ago, and now they have to live in government housing and they are going to have to be in the primary company of two cheaters, I just hope that their father is able to teach them that what they are doing is wrong and how to spot those kind of men.
