I was reading an article on AOL when I came across the above poll. In case it changes or they take it down, here's what it reads:

"Has the financial crisis rendered laissez-faire capitalism a failed philosophy?
40% - Yes
53% No
7% Not sure"

Just the fact that 40% of people said yes scares me. Chances are, at least half of the people who said no would still probably would border on yes. Now take into account that all, if not nearly all of the people who voted in that poll are American. So nearly half of the country has gone socialist and thinks capitalism is a failed philosophy. Is this..... possible?

And on top of that, the comments are even scarier.

Very misleading poll. We've never had true laissez-faire, and the last time we were close to it was in 1910.

I guess the fact 40% think we have or had true laissez-fair capitalism is the scary part.

Oh... The question was written by Arianna Huffington. Danged retarded emo bitches writing offensively inaccurate op-eds and loaded questions.

it's a word game. Very few people truly understand what a laissez-faire market really is. I highly suspect you could present the plan for a fairly constructed free market to those people who voted yes and they'd love it, provided you called it something else.

A very dishonest poll indeed. Reminds me of something Frank Luntz would do.

It doesn't matter if most people want socialism... it's unconstitutional. We live in a Constitutional Republic, NOT a democracy!

It doesn't matter if most people want socialism... it's unconstitutional. We live in a Constitutional Republic, NOT a democracy!

You're kidding yourself. With Democrats in charge? People have said similar things, too, about regulation of education and such - but that didn't stop them, did it? Did it stop them when they passed the bailout? Now bailouts? We were a Republic. But law and order can only do so much when you have Communists running a country. The law means nothing to them - so long as what they're doing is for the "greater good" in their eyes, they'll do whatever they like, as they have done. We all would like to continue calling ourselves a Republic, but law and order has been worn away so much by these people that there's direct elections, now, too. And we know what that means - we're on the verge of a Democracy.

The law means nothing to these people. Plain and simple. They'll do what they like. If they want socialism, they'll have socialism. And the constitution won't stop them in the slightest. It never has before... the constitution, to them, is a joke. It's a joke to everyone but people like us.

Stupid fucking americans. I hope they really suffer during this depression. The needed "correction" and "Great Reckoning" are LONG overdue.<IMHO> :( The pendulum swings both ways. ;)

No laissez faire system has a controlled auto industry and centralized banking system.

To most people, the term "laissez-faire capitalism" brings visions of 19th century slums, robber barons, and human thumbs in your potted ham, since teacher told us that's when the economy was "laissez-faire." Most people want some degree of a "mixed economy," since they think there needs to be some kind of government interference to keep the "excesses" of capitalism at bay.
