I am a webmaster and own a forum with 12k members. I almost never have problems.... As I have mentioned earlier, I would be happy to give recommendations on the subject... Oh - and I don't think you need to spend any more money than you are already spending.

Guys, have you contacted SoftLayer and asked them why the forum is going down? They have a 99% uptime guarantee, so the forum being down means either 2 things. 1, they messed up, or 2, you guys need to upgrade or optimize these forums.

are you on a dedicated server? If so what are the specs?

Yes I would speak with Matt and see what he suggests or has to offer. I don't think you will have a problem with donations this site is vital to Ron Paul and his campaign. Matt said it should not cost any more check it out?

um someone has offered to PAY for your hosting for you back when it went down around Iowa straw poll time
there are probably many that can offer something similar for you

why don't you take someone up on their offer?

+ its not like dedicated hosting costs that much...you can get a decent server for $100 bucks a month. And for $500 bucks a month you can get a Quad core monstrosity with gigs of RAM and tons of harddrive space

I do not think that this forum needs a dedicated server. As I said I have a 12k member forum that uses a shared hosting solution and it works just fine. I personally think it depends on the host, how much of a peak/burst they can handle, and their network architecture to the specific box it is on.

There is no need for donations. I think you should put a big add on the right side of the forum, like most other sites do.

And as a side benefit, it makes
the text return much more
often, and it is 100 times more
easier to read than long text.
usually it. Also, in addition to
gaining more money from
the add being on the side, any
more money you get than what
is needed for the server, can
be donated to Ron Paul.

1and1.com is pretty good.

Their shared hosting isn't so hot if you get any decent volume of traffic. I used to run a myspace site, and any time we got over X number of hits, the whole thing would get screwy and go down. We eventually upgraded to a dedicated box with them, and that was nearly as bad. I wouldn't recommend them.

I use dedibox. They have awesome affordable packages with unmetered bandwidth and damn near no downtime (I say this from my own personal experiences). Josh knows if he needs help with unix/security stuff he can come to me, if he's not familiar with managing his own server.
