Why wouldn't it be a good thing?

Newspapers are 100% controlled by the gov't via the CFR and 90% bullshit. Most stories have a factual basis but are so clouded in government propaganda you will never get the truth. Perhaps if you are a sports junkie and enjoy looking at the box scores, they may be of value, otherwise, a waste of time.

There's no originality, just parroting of the NY Times. Newspapers are a ridiculous, antiquated way of getting information. Good riddance.

it's bad. This will just allow the picture show illusion that is television to completely control peoples minds. The written word must be preserved, it is our greatest weapon.

I saw a newspaper the other day. It was held up for cameramen as proof of an idiotic op-ed's existence.

+1. Read Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death. While the guy makes several significant mistakes in my view, he ultimately makes the argument that forms of discourse ultimately change how people think. He favors a written culture rather than a visual one of soundbites.

Newspapers have some pro's. Editorials give differing viewpoints, as do op-eds. You may take ads out on them effectively and get your point across if you are determined.

I think the government will do a bailout and take over the newspapers as well.

They will have ownership of housing, cars, newspapers and odds are whatever else they bail out with our money.

+ a lot of the ones are the neocon and left leaning ones - would be good if they went under.
+ while some will rely on TV more, many will rely on the Internet more for news - it's easier to get our message out that way. Google news matches on "fringe" and pro-our side articles too in searches.

- I forsee some of them being bought up leading to greater media consolidation.
- newspaper ads and letters to the editor are some of our more cost effective weapons.

I think it's great. I feel the same about TV. I heard on the radio the other day, that in a few years, we will only have one network. Like we don't already.

This will be a great opportunity for underground news sources, and alternative media, because people will be starved for an "alternative". Take for instance music- the minute that the alternative music becomes mainstream music, it has reached it's peak---> enter the new alternative music. There is one exception to this- classical music. This is the sort of music to our ears that does not ever age, does not ever get old, and it is because it speaks to many regardless of what label society places upon us.

I read that classified ads account for about half of newspaper revenue. Now people just use Craigslist for free.

Except that most print media is dying out because people can get their news for free on the Internet.

Hmm, free information or pay a subscription...I suppose this is how the private schools died.

"Newspapers are 100% controlled by the gov't via the CFR and 90% bullshit"

It's a shame. Gannett was once owned by an Old-Rightist who used his newspapers to heavily criticize FDR. The Baltimore Sun used to employ HL Mencken. Henry Hazlitt wrote for The Wall Street Journal, The NY Times, and Newsweek. R.C. Hoiles was the owner and publisher of Freedom Newspapers from 1950-1970, and was a self-identified Voluntaryist--I believe Freedom Newspapers emcompassed 20 newspapers by the time he died.

And more importantly, we still have certain footholds. Thomas Sowell and Walter E. Williams have regular columns.
Freedom Newspapers is now Freedom Communications, and consists of 75 newspapers (including the Orange County Register). It is owned by libertarian Scott Flanders (who voted for Ron Paul) and the Orange County Register's Editorial Director is Tibor Machan, a hardcore libertarian. Hell, the Orange County Register's website has a blog called "Orange Punch: A Liberty Blog" that is pretty damned good.

Lets now decry the end of newspapers yet---they've been useful to our movement in the past and could be again in the future.

Free information from where?? National News, State News, or Local News?? Do you expect reporters work for free?

The local paper is good for local news as long as it isn't too politically biased. Paper is nice because its easy to transport and you can carry it with you. Once those Ereaders get better, people would probably be willing to download the paper to that medium. It's true, people have switched more to the Internet, which IS affecting the paper's circulation, but when people do this, they lose the Local News. It is valuable to know what's going on locally.

Just about everything in my local paper is also on their online page for free. They have advertisers who help pay for reporters. They don't need subscribers.

Yikes. I guess there is no way to get out? Would it cost more to bail on your contract than it would to pay each monthly fee? If the difference isn't that much, I would say abolish cable just on priciple. As far as bundling packages go, you might look in to bundling your voice mail, internet and land line to save money- skip the "washing of the brain", as one of my Israeli friends calls it.

I don't think the advertising revenue is enough to keep them in business. That's why they're going away. Paper or Ereader is nice because you don't always have a computer to read from. Paper is nice because it doesn't require any power.

Newspaper companies are dying for the same reason buggy whip manufacturers died- they are obsolete.

What percent of people under the age of 40 reads a daily paper?

I know old folks still read them, but when they die out, young people won't be replacing them as subscribers.

It's not necessarily bad. I watch maybe 6 hours of TV a week (daily show and colbert report) and read about 30 hours a week online to get my news and do my research not taking into account the books I read offline

True, many people watch the idiot box to get their information now and don't read at all, but I see it as a national progression of technology. Besides, people are bound to go elsewhere for their news when the sources of their information is all compromised by propoganda

"Those who don't read the newspapers are better off than those who do insofar as those who know nothing are better off than those whose heads are filled with half-truths and lies." --- Thomas Jefferson

I love this quote, and aint it the truth. Amazing how nothing ever changes.
Most newspaper readers I know are liberal know it all types, who really don't know squat about how the real world works. They arrogantly say, "I read the newspaper", to make it sound like they are intelligent because they read. Meanwhile the newspapers are like a giant filter that only give you false dichotomies. .
The truly informed are the ones who do their own research and triple fact check. The vast online web of information is disposable to anyone who can point and click a mouse, but its unbelievable how lazy people are to even do this. I welcome the end of the newspapers, however there needs to be a market for true independent research, and investigative journalism.

This appeal to emotion was brought to you by internet 2.0, the new mouthpiece for government propaganda.
