Is it illegal to accept gold in exchange for goods and services?

Could Gold and silver holders create an ebay style exchange on their own ?

No, it is not illegal. You can exchange gold for other goods. They'd have to ban bartering as well if they did that, and that would just piss people off.

Hmm... I seen some time ago a person who was compiling a list of liberty minded business listings. I wonder if a real start up web site could do an ebay style exchange? .. those who would be willing to go gold for payment.

No it is not illegal. In fact, you can have legally enforceable gold clauses in contracts under 31 USC 5101-5118. GoldMoney (http://www.runtogold.com/goldmoney/) allows gold and silver to function in an extremely efficient alternative to the current monetary system. No need for the Ebay exchange fees.
