"We have built no temple but the Capitol, we consult no common oracle but the Constitution." --- Rufus Choate 1833

the romans had their sacred chickens. before making a major decision, they
consulted them. the context of the quote has to be set against the customs
of the romans. he's an ipswich massachusetts lawyer and later on a senator,
he who is a protege of dan'l webster well knew his classics. james madison
was an influence on he, as well as thomas jefferson. he's following daniel webster
into the senate and daniel webster is the senator who then takes over his seat...
we moderns do not have a temple to the gods or goddesses, we do not have
a delphic oracle as a high priestess. we are the madisonian seperate of church
and state. few were atheists, nearly all were more than simply deists, the signers
of our declaration of independence. ---the quote is reflective of a generation...
and given who rufus choate backs for potus during the last few years of his life,
we can see a continuity between this quote by rufus choate and the way, almost
obsessively that (ironically enough) whereby andrew johnson articulates out
his stances concerning his take on our Constitution... and the laws of the land...

methinks sen. rufus choate and andy johnson equally enshrine our constitution,
yet henry clay and john c. calhoun are somewhat "sometimes slouches" on this...
http://www.bartleby.com/268/9/13.html --- henry clay is the very whig of the hour.

if henry clay's ambitions and grand "america plan" consumately hearkens greatly to new york state 'boiler-plate" and mr. burr?
---are we surprised he holds back when he cuts the deal with JQA that so roils andrew jackson in 1824? --- well we know,
tis not webster or clay of the rhetorical "triumverate" who is south carolina's native son! ...well we know its john c. calhoun...
