With the bailout approaching 7 trillion dollars, I think there should be a call again to make the Turkey the National Bird.

http://www.clickondetroit.com/sh/holidays/stories/holidays-20001113-135438.html

"For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.

"With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country....

"I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America... He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."

--Benjamin Franklin, in a letter to his daughter

Nah... the VULTURE would be more appropriate for the current "empire of lies."

Vul-ture: any of various large diurnal birds of prey having naked heads and weak claws and feeding chiefly on carrion

I think the bull would be more appropriate.

Both congressmen and the 700 club worship it.

Personally I have thought for a long time it should be a "Seagull"

Think about it... they circle around overhead and wait until they see something they can steal. Then they swoop down making a loud screeching racket and steal away what you have. They remain in the area until there is nothing left for them to take.

Just like the govt to swoop down and take from others what is not theirs.

And here I thought you were going to make the Seagull manager joke: "Seagull managers fly in, make a lot of noise, crap on everything, then fly out."

Well most definitely and accurately as the official US Federal government symbolic bird. :p

The DODO would be a very apt and good choice too.<IMHO> ;)

ol' Ben gives a good anecdote for the turkey, but in my opinion he's all wet on this one. I'll keep the bald eagle for the country, but the turkey should be the symbol of the Fed, or the Senate/House or maybe all of them. dodo seems to also be appropriate for the country because that seems to be the direction we are headed - extinction and oblivion, if we don't change our ways.

as for the part Ben said about the eagle taking other's prey, lions do the same thing, as apparently do all predators. taking the turkey as a symbol for the country might be an invitation to be gobbled up. oh, I guess we've already done that!
