It seems it's that time again when Webster's selects the word that has had the most social impact of the past year. Remember truthiness from 2006 and subprime from 2007?

Webster's published their choice today. The 2008 'Word of the Year' is:

Bailout

I think they made the right choice here. I was almost afraid they would choose "hope" or "change" or some other such bullshit.

What do you guys think? Fitting, no?

I would have expected it to be "like".

I thought they'd have gone with "change".

I actually went looking for this because I had this random thought about it earlier today. I googled it to remind myself of some of the past WOTY selections, and lo and behold, they had made this year's choice just today. I was pleased to see it was "bailout" as that was my prediction as well, but I, also, cannot prove that. :p

I like "obamapologist" but that hasn't seemed to take off yet. Maybe next year after he has had plenty of time to break his promises. Oh I can't wait!
