I second the Holy Bible. For additional insight into the dire state of affairs so one can discuss these issues with acquaintances, try the home page of WING TV. Naturally, I don't agree with Victor and Lisa on everything, but they're intelligent, witty, and tenacious. Their book list on the home page of WING TV is a veritable feast of knowledge and I consider nearly all of it mandatory reading.

the inlaws are coming for Christmas and they're ordering online and sending packages ahead of time. The last one to arrive? From the Ludwig von Mises Institute! Can't wait...

:D

Tones - atheists do celebrate Christmas, at least my family does.

Tips for the overseas cook:

Baking at high altitudes: It is probably best to obtain high-altitude recipes for the country to which one is assigned. But if none are available, this list can be used to modify an old family sea-level recipe. When two amounts are given, try the smaller adjustment first. If a cake still needs to be improved, use the larger adjustment next time. Experiment on family meals first!
Reduce baking powder – for each teaspoon in a recipe, decrease 1 / 4 teaspoon
Reduce sugar – for each cup in a recipe, decrease 2 to 3 tablespoons
Increase liquids – for each cup in a recipe, add 3 to 4 tablespoons

Using meat of uncertain origin: Tapeworm can be transmitted through meat insufficiently cooked. Always thoroughly cook meat. Through cooking at at high altitudes is difficult; for example, grilled meat which is “done” in the lower altitudes of the U.S. May be unsafe at higher elevations. Freezing meat before use will destroy the possibility of transmitting tapeworm.

When using a cookbook that has been translated into English: Be sure to check whether the recipes use British or American measurements; it can make a difference with liquids. A British cup, for example, holds 10 fl. oz. While an American cup holds 8 fl. oz. Also be aware of British and European ingredient names: single cream is light cream and double cream is heavy cream; minced meat is ground meat; icing sugar is confectioner's or powdered sugar, caster sugar is granulated sugar; biscuits are cookies; Maryland cookies are chocolate chip cookies; and corn flower means cornstarch.
