cant the ACLU get involved?

Possibly, but I don't know if Ian would want to use the ACLU and appeal the court's ruling within the confines of their own system and laws since he has a fundamental disagreement with the system itself.

Please stop creating confusion on the issue... The jail sentence was unrelated to the couch issue.

Well, he was in jail in the first place because of the couch and he got sentenced to some time solely because of the couch. The reason why he was asking questions in the first place, which landed him 3 months in jail, was because he was trying to dispute the ridiculous charges of the couch issue.
