Huckabee Earns Typecast, Commentators Praise Glib Performance (http://www.nwaonline.net/articles/2007/09/08/columns/john_brummett/090807brummett.txt)
Perhaps I reflect merely the ennui that familiarity breeds, but commentators continue to compliment performances by Huckabee that I find superficial, silly and tiresome.
Huckabee got into the spotlighted direct debate exchange with Paul over the war in Iraq.
It's an interesting dynamic: Paul is absolutely right and brave about the insanity of our presence in Iraq. But the part of his argument about how we merely fire up our terrorist enemies by messing around in their part of the world makes him vulnerable to posturing outrage by the serious candidates about how we and our brave troops are in no way to blame for al-Qaida.
As the other candidates fell over themselves to decry Paul, it somehow came to be that Huckabee -- perhaps because he happened to be standing next to Paul -- had the great pleasure of a direct exchange with the eccentric Libertarian.
Again, Huckabee garnered pundit praise for remarks that actually were hollow and altogether on the short side of Paul's if you were scoring on substantive debate points.
