PA for instance. Went I believe 55% Obama, 44% McCain, but the 3 population centers of Philadelphia and the suburbs, Pittsburgh (SW corner), and Erie (NW Corner) were the enclaves of Blue.

Texas was almost all predominantly red, except down on the border with Mexico.

I still don't get Florida.

I'm sad to say my county voted for Obama. :(

More blue than usual, but it still has a whole lot of red. And think, that is almost the worst a Republican can do.

I like how the only counties to vote Obama in Nevada were Washoe and Clark, and yet he won by a comfortable margin. No one must live in the rural parts of the state.

Most of the rural parts of the state are desert, most of it owned by the federal government.

If you looked at the vote totals you'd realize that a lot of those counties only have a few thousand votes in them, while Obama won in landslides in counties with a lot of votes. In a year when a Republican wins, it is really red, you can barely see any blue at all.

Think logically... if there are more red counties than blue, what did the blue counties have more of than the red? Now think really hard now you can figure out the answer. I know you can.

I know a lot of these states are "blue" states and it is based on popular vote in the state and not geographic areas... but still there are several blue states that look pretty red on this map. LOL

What are your thoughts about why urban areas always trend toward blue, and rural areas toward red?

What are your thoughts about why urban areas always trend toward blue, and rural areas toward red?

Rural areas tend to be more self reliant is one of the reasons. My county voted democratic for the first time in 3o some years.

What are your thoughts about why urban areas always trend toward blue, and rural areas toward red? A thought, a much higher concentration per square mile of more "liberal" ( socialist ) intellectuals and wannabes, welfare recipients, government employees and unionized labor tends to live in the urban areas. ;)

What are your thoughts about why urban areas always trend toward blue, and rural areas toward red?

Because self-described "liberals" are only 22% of the voting public, they tend to cling together in urban areas. Also, with their lifestyle they don't really fit in with people in rural areas. Imagine an anti-gun liberal living in small town Alabama, they wouldn't last too long if they said anything about politics, or acted in a liberal manner.

Urban areas are the places where those who depend on gov't are "corralled." Those who depend on the state for their livelihood - either because they work for the state or because they are dependent on the state for all/most services - have to be close to those urban centers for easy access to the "gimme" stuff they get from their chosen teat (be it a paycheck because they work for the state, or true "gimme" service stuff).

It is to their advantage to support whichever candidate best ensures the survival of the state, as the state is their source of their own personal survival.

Rural folk don't depend on the state for survival - they're much more self reliant. Therefore, they don't tend to base their votes on which candidate will provide them the most "gimme."

This does have implications if the US ever has a violent revolution.

I don't buy that. Here in Kentucky we are more dependent on the state than just about any nation. We have sixteen of the poorest counties in the nation. Welfare recipients are high.

It is my personal belief that rural southerners are hardcore socialists whom only vote Republican because they are pro-gun, anti-abortion, and anti-same sex marriage.

What I meant was rural southerners are socialists who happen to be pro-gun, anti-abortion, and anti-same sex marriage. They are typically FDR New Deal Dems who can't vote Dem because of a few social issues.

If you recall, up until the mid '60s the south was overwhelmingly democratic. With the death of both traditional conservatism and classical liberalism the south turned sharply to the right.
