Didn't we think the same thing in July? After reading the Washington Times story, I'm not sure that he is getting as many "unique" hits as we thought.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070907/NATION/109070094/1028/ELECTION

Leading the Republican pack is newly announced candidate former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, who gave his reasons for running in a 13-minute Web video. He had 381,000 visits to his original site, ImWithFred.com, which now forwards traffic to Fred08.com.

Mr. Thompson, best known for his role on NBC's "Law & Order" series, used the Internet this spring to reach a wide audience. He taped a snarky Web video responding to Michael Moore as the two "sparred" over the Internet on Cuba policy.

Republican Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former New York mayor, had 124,000 unique visitors to JoinRudy2008.com in July, followed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (MittRomney.com) with 116,000 and Rep. Ron Paul (RonPaul2008.com) of Texas with 113,000.

Is Nielsen accurate?

I don't buy it... http://www.quantcast.com/ronpaul2008.com says different. According, Ron has more unique hits than Mitt and co.

Is Nielsen accurate?

Oh, you mean Nielsen, the old media gatekeeper? The one who has an interest in downplaying anyone that might bypass the MSM and favor using the internet instead of the media they get their lobbying power from? That Nielsen? :D

All the reports I've seen show Ron is most popular on the net. The old media is lying or mistaken. Check out Google Trends:

How do professionals track web traffic? Alexa or Nielsen?

Michael Ingram

If Nielsen had its way, we would all be watching the Olsen twins on Full House for the next 30 years.

I wouldnt buy anything they said, even if it was good.

I know for Alexa you have to install their tool bar to make your visit count towards a website. Most people don't install it because its essentially spyware.

The imwithfred.com website is his old one. The new one is fred08.com, which actually beat ronpaul2008.com on the 6th.

The general consensus seems to be that Ron Paul is doing better on-line. This corresponds with other evidence we've seen such as meet up groups and the on-line infrastructure that springing up around the campaign.

I made this post on another thread:

Website Traffic: Ron Paul vs. Fred Thompson vs. Mitt Romney vs. Barack Obama vs. Hillary Clinton
http://snipurl.com/1qgmq

Ron Paul has been leading everyone the last month except for Fred Thompson whose numbers are high now because he just officially kicked off his site/campaign. They will fall...

Also it's worth noting that the huge spike in traffic Ron Paul received in May after the debate will be almost impossible to match because going from a rank of about 100,000 to a rank of around 30,000 is quite easy, but then it starts getting a lot more competitive and more difficult to spike in the higher levels. That said Ron Paul's current ranking is 10,226! That's phenomenal and a HUGE spike in traffic since the last debate.

Also, Ron Paul's site is fairly bare bones. It's really just a few pages with links to other sites. Even the official news/blog is hosted elsewhere on a 3rd party site. Whereas the other candidates keep everything they can on their domains (e.g. News Archives, Forums, etc). This will only further inflate their traffic ranking.

I agree that RP rules the internet for the GOP, but I am disturbed by the Washington Times piece though.

They site the July Nielsen ratilngs, and they are not clear what month they pulled the F. Thompson stats.. Does anyone have access to the August Nielsen ratings so we can fact check this story? Something seems fishy, and it seems it would be pretty easy to verify.

alexa is junk, use hitwise, compete.com or quantcast.com

Also google trends is a good predictor of traffic.

Nielsen is way off with its 4x visitors estimate. The 2 sites were pretty close, I wouldn't doubt if fred had more in July/August with all the press he is getting.. but no way its 4x the visitors.

Nielsen put out a press release for the July data. You would have to have a subscribtion or purchase the data for August.

If Ron Paul has less web page views, than how does he have 3.6 million youtube views? Why is he the most searched political candidate, why is he always on the front page of digg? No, the data form website trackers like Alexa, completely coincide with all other data.
