"It's time for a real Patriot Act that brings out the patriot in all of us. We propose universal civilian service for every young American. Under this plan, All Americans between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five will be asked to serve their country by going through three months of basic training, civil defense preparation and community service. ...

Here's how it would work. Young people will know that between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five, the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service. They'll be asked to report for three months of basic civil defense training in their state or community, where they will learn what to do in the event of biochemical, nuclear or conventional attack; how to assist others in an evacuation; how to respond when a levee breaks or we're hit by a natural disaster. These young people will be available to address their communities' most pressing needs."

President-Elect Barack Obama's choice for chief of staff in his incoming administration, is co-author of a book, The Plan: Big Ideas for America, that calls for, among other things, compulsory service for all Americans ages 18 to 25

I've got some ideas for compulsory service for 18-25 year old women. Perhaps I should discuss them with B.

I know this is all well intended but my life is my own and only I get to decide which course I'll go down or how I spend my time.

This 24 year old will not be a civilian draftee.

Exactly.

Fuck this. I am so tired of these people taking over our country and forcing us into slavery! If they try to do this, I hope someone takes it all the way to the Supreme Court. I mean, how, just HOW could the Supreme Court which is supposedly there to defend the Constitution, interpret that passage in a way that doesn't include community service for the youth?

Edit: nevermind. http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=167467 :(

I suspect a truckload of lawsuits will result over this - Obama and his administration are going to find out real quickly, within the first year they attempt to do this nationwide that it is: unconstitutional and not even legal in a defacto law kind of way.

They'll also, on the other hand, get many parents and students alike to 'subscribe' to the idea and support it, without knowing exactly what they are actually supporting and condoning... they already do something like this in some highschools (required 'community service hours' to graduate) - but the divide between those who support it and those who don't could potentially lead to (literally) a civil war type scenerio, as it erupts into the soclialism/democracy type 'majority rule' force, and as freedom and liberty minded parents and graduates do everything in their power to maintain their right to their own charity/goodwill towards mankind/volunteerism, as well as their destinies.

Much as I try not to get emotional about Obama's 'ideas', this one makes me so incredibly angry (fist through a wall type angry) and incredibly heartbroken - for Obama most of all - he will be so hated for this 'idea' by millions, and what it causes in backlash ...

I think the outcome of such good intentioned 'forced unity' insanity will haunt Obama for the rest of his lifetime, as well as his chidren's lifetimes, as they one day will be adults and perhaps not hold Obama's 'democratic' ideology, nor approve of what their own father attempted to force young adults to do - much as one would think growing up in a strongly Democratic household would lead to those children being 'absolutely' politically permanent in the ideals of Democratic/socialist thinking, that actually isn't always the case in politics, religion, business and social issues - no matter how much parents try to 'mold' a child, the mind and the heart do have free will (that is something that can not be 'forced out' or censored out of being.)

What a legacy is shaping up for this historic president... and what a shame that it's going to be used by racists to shout out 'see, told you so...' when most of us already know this has nothing to do with the color of his skin, only a difference in political philosophy. A severe difference in political philosophy - and his 'side' always, eventually, collapses and loses (but not before causing so much grief, suffering and destruction that it leaves in its wake a profound message that is never heeded and, unfortunately, often repeated.)

I wonder when things will get logical and compassionate for this little planet... I hope it's in my lifetime.
