American Dream?

I always thought America was base on an abstract dream centered around life, liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness (I also like to throw in property;)). But now I hear there is an American "Promise" that has specific things that you are entitled to from the nation. Have the media and the socialists rewritten what America is?
