"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of the founders is alive in our time, who still question the POWER of our democracy, tonight is your answer." Barack Obama

When asked by a woman while he was leaving the Constitutional Convention what kind of government they had given us - "A Republic, if you can keep it." - Benjamin Franklin

"The republican is the only form of government which is not eternally at open or secret war with the rights of mankind." - Thomas Jefferson

“We are a Republican Government. Real liberty is never found in despotism or in the extremes of Democracy.” - Alexander Hamilton

"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a republican form of government." - from the US Constitution

"Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself. There was never a democracy that did not commit suicide." - John Adams

"The evils we experience flow from the excess of democracy. The people do not want virtue, but are the dupes of pretended patriots." - Elbridge Gerry - Massachusetts, Signer of the Declaration of Independence and Member of the Constitutional Convention

"It has been observed that a pure democracy if it were practicable would be the most perfect government. Experience has proved that no position is more false than this. The ancient democracies in which the people themselves deliberated never possessed one good feature of government. Their very character was tyranny; their figure deformity." - Alexander Hamilton

"Democracies have been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths." - James Madison

That's fine. I don't own any of these words. Spread it far and wide.

All of the tyrants like democracy because, unlike a constitutional republic, it places no limit on the power that they can attain.

“Democracy is ... the only path to national success and dignity.” — George W. Bush

“We must revitalize our democracy.” — Bill Clinton

“The world must be made safe for democracy.” —Woodrow Wilson

Obama and McCain's liberal/socialist/communist ilk espouse ideas that are wholly unrelated and unrecognizable to those that the founders espoused. Politicians of today are much more in the collectivist European mold. I have trouble understanding how these people can look at our founding and somehow correlate what they do today with what we were founded on. I want to know who's the dick who brought these socialist ideas with them in the 19th century on a boat from Europe.
