The Canadian prankster who duped US vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin into believing he was French President Nicolas Sarkozy has described how he pulled off the highly-publicised fake phone-call.

During the call, the US vice-presidential nominee unwittingly discusses politics, offers Audette an invitation to go hunting, and praises Sarkozy's "beautiful wife".

When Audette tells her he can see her as president, she laughs and says: "Maybe in eight years."

Audette, a noted prankster who has also reportedly duped former French president Jacques Chirac and Britney Spears, told ABC he was usually only able to get through "30 to 40 per cent of the material" before the person realised they were being conned.

"But with Mrs Palin we got lucky, because we used all the material we had written. At the end, we had to improvise."
