Texas Congressman Ron Paul, the only GOP candidate to oppose the war in Iraq from the beginning, stole the spotlight with his appeal to a non-interventionist foreign policy that left his seven Republican counterparts silent.
When asked by moderator Chris Wallace if he was concerned about creating a "bloodbath" if the U.S. pulled out of Iraq quickly, Paul responded, "The people who say there will be a bloodbath are the ones who said it will be a cakewalk ... and that it will be paid for by oil. Why believe them? They've been wrong on everything they've said."
Paul further noted that "the war has not gone well one bit" and a Paul administration would see a complete withdraw of U.S. troops from the Middle East.
"I would leave completely. Why leave the troops in the region? It was the fact that we had troops in Saudi Arabia - was one of the three reasons given for the attack on 9/11," Paul said.
Huckabee, in responding to Paul, invoked the retail golden rule: You break it, you bought it. He told the audience that America "broke" Iraq and it is her responsibility to fix it. Huckabee then told Paul the issue is not about whether America should have gone into Iraq; rather, it is what to do since America is already there.
Paul retorted, "We've dug a hole for ourselves and we've dug a hole for our party. We're losing elections and we're going down next year if we don't change it, and it has all to do with foreign policy, and we have to wake up to this fact."
Huckabee responded, "Even if we lose elections, we should not lose our honor, and that is more important."
Paul silenced Huckabee by asking the former governor, "We've lost over 5,000 Americans over there in Afghanistan, in Iraq and plus the civilians killed. ... How long - what do we have to pay - to save face?"
