Lady from Chicago was taking about the "burden" on their public transportation system - said they had 21 Million additional riders and at the same time they were cutting service. She neglected to mention within what time period or how recent the numbers were...
Chicago has a population that is under 3 Million, so it obviously isn't per day. Is that per month? Per year?, Per decade? Per century?
With Gas prices dropping, it would seem odd that 21 Million people would suddenly decide to ride public transportation.
It also seems odd that they would be reducing their schedule with this BOOM in business.
Now if people drive, the city and the transportation district get nothing (other than gas tax), but if they ride public transportation - they are charged - WHAT A WIN FALL! - 21 MILLION new customers! - YIPPIE!)
so she comes begging before a Congressional committee looking for a handout... Did so much as one Congress critter question her on this? - NOT!
Then came NY - looking for 31 Billion and promicing dire consequences if their sewers were not fixed.
Then the Airlines industry and Amtrack - also looking for handouts...
So the Federal government collects taxes and wasted a good portion of that in bureaucracy and paperwork distributing it to the states who do the same. They also hold these funds ransome depending on if states submit to unfunded mandates - that cost the states more. Wouldn't it be much more efficient if the states just collected their own taxes and fixed their own infrastructure?
