View Full Version : A win for Lawson is a win for us all

The last poll data had us within 10 pts. We can take this thing. Can you all imagine the messages that we would send; a rouge GOP grassroots army unseats an entrenched Establishment democrat, in a heavily liberal district. Imagine that.

The best indication of how close we are is the behavior of David Price. The man is knocking on doors :D

And let me tell you another story...

As a Dr, one of BJ's concerns is addiction and the war on drugs. While reaching out into the different communities he developed a reputation with these guys (http://www.trosainc.org/index.htm), and it is working out very well. Turns out that group hosted a candidate forum, where Lawson and Price kinda mixed it up, and BJ kicked butt. IOW - The boyz like BJ and 16 of em are out working their neighborhoods, sittin at the polls, the whole gig.

So today, Price shows up a poll; our guy there is pitching an older lady. Price comes up behind as they finish and introduces himself to the lady; she says, "I know you. I voted for you last time. But I gotta tell you, I ain't voting for you this time!" and walked off; leaving our opponent alone with his thoughts

We can win this.

I spent the first part of the day out in front of an early voting location. (It's an easier sell than RP. The general election is much different than the primary...) We have a few things going for us, and a few against us.

On the pro side, and by no means an exhaustive list:

we have a great candidate who is working hard; and has been since this all began. If you haven't seen the "Meet BJ Lawson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3B-6aiFVWg)" video, click the link.

Secondly, congressional approval ratings are at an all time low and people are ready for "change"; David Price (http://www.davidsprice.com/) has been part of the problem for a long time and people know it.

Finality, and most importantly, we have the message. We have the truth. Freedom IS popular.

We CAN take this thing.

On the minus side:

we have a very progressive district; many people are not used to thinking much about republicans (since Karl and the Bush Boys destroyed the party.) Not to say that BJ is not sellable, it just takes some finesse. I had my best luck today with a simple, "Have you heard of..." pitch. (that was yesterday I refined my pitch a bit, today, and am nailing it).

Another minus is the simple fact that we are a challenger facing a long term incumbant. That is why the polling place work and canvassing is so important. While many people have seen the commercials, face to face pitching is still the most effective.

One of our biggest obstacles is that NC has an option on the ballot to vote the party slate. This is where the polling place work is critical. We need to get the new (Obama) voters to vote for Lawson apart from the slate. We have devloped stratagies for this and they work. Again, face to face work, and watching the voters get approached by the GOP and DNC "voters guide" people helps us target our pitch.

So, we have a hill to climb but it is not all that steep. We are fighters and we are in this to win this. I spent 10 houirs at a poll today, then went with BJ to a "house party". In the car between BJ is making phone calls. Campaigning non-stop.

There is one other thing in our favor; we have a secret weapon, ourselves.

We have shown the world what we can do for Ron Paul. Now I am asking you all to put that kind of entusiasm into helping BJ Lawson. We need volunteers. We need you all to recruit a few friends, sign up, and use the new online tool (https://www.lawsonforcongress.com/outreach/)to make phone calls. Right now we are hitting the donors list for a last minute push for volunteers and funds (https://www.lawsonforcongress.com/donate/). The Pocket Constitutions are gold and my polling place went through 200 in a few hours. The next stage will be GOTV. Calling to promote BJ and get out the voters.

Finally, we are going to need hundreds of ground volunteers to do a righteous job on election day. We have 194 polling places open for 12 hours on 11/4. If anyone in the surrounding areas can come down to help. You will be working for Freedom, Peace, and Prosperity. It really is critical get be at the polls to counter the minuses listed above. The best way to get involved is to sign up on the online tool (https://www.lawsonforcongress.com/outreach/). Please post this message to meet-ups/family/friends/etc. Please help us help BJ. We are doing everything humanly possible and can win this. We just need to mobilize and spread the load. If anyone has any questions you can contact me direct, or call the office, or post here.

Onward and forward

I really hope he wins. If he does, itll unite this grassroots movement. All we need is a win to get people motivated again.

and I hope he wins because he's a good guy. He'll fight for us, respect our liberty and make an amazing addition to Congress.

While you're working the polls.. if they say they're voting straight ticket remind them that in NC a straight ticket vote doesn't include the vote for President. They have to manually go and add that selection. Kind of a segway into "while you're doing that you can also switch that vote from Price to Lawson".. heh..

A LOT of people in NC voted straight ticket in 2004 and didn't vote for President.

Great report! People can make calls from anywhere in the country. If you can't donate $$ then please consider making calls. Even if you have donated, please consider making calls. Price is lying to the public, trying to tie Lawson & Ron Paul to Bush and the neocons (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?t=164678)! WTF - this clown needs to go down!!

Conley needs a HUGE upset, Lawson a mild one and McClintock is the favorite to win.

I wish I could help Conley more than saying; voter turnout has presented an unique opportunity. There are the first time Obama voters who will neglect to fill out the rest of the ballot. There are the independents who should be a natural for Conley, and there are the true repubs who are sick of the way Karl and The Bush Boyz have destroyed the GOP. They know Graham is part of the problem, and if you can get an issue statement into their hand they may, "send a messege"

The r3VOLution needs volunteers to mobilize, pass it on...

If Conley puts people on the ground and works the polls he actually could win. But he should utilize the opposite strategy of BJ Lawson. Lawson is having local liberals and black-voters work the most Democratic/Black/Liberal precincts for him.
Conley should have as many nice-dressed, clean shaven, conservative boys as he can get at the conservative/republican precincts Upstate--working the polls for him. He'll benefit from higher turnout from Obama and with a small percentage form Graham's right wing, he may be able to swing it.

Get off the forums (not permanently of course) and make calls for Dr. Lawson! I'm doing it, it's easy, it's all laid out for you. You're not talking to random voters, these are fellow supporters and we just want them to help with a final push before election day.

No matter who wins my district I'm still screwed. I'm doing this for Dr. Lawson to cancel out my Representative's vote!

I think that the Lawson campaign has run a great campaign. They have learned some new tricks and developed some great tools. After the election, Ron Paul supporters from around the country need to discuss our triumphs and our failures. If we evaluate this election cycle, we can learn strategies for moving forward. The Lawson campaign has a lot to add to that discussion.

I think I am going to make some phone calls on Saturday too.

Thank you all who are helping in any way. We are kicking tail and taking names. The more volunteers we have, the better chance for success we will have. Regardless of the outcome, we are causing serious pain to the establishment and I gotta tell you, it feels GREAT.

As I sit here typing , I am surrounded by people. We are doing a phonebank to get poll workers for 11/4. As stated, there will be 194 spots open for 12 hours, so we can use help from the surrounding area to come help. Bob Conley can use help also, so if you are closer to SC, perhaps you would do better there. Either way, please contact us and "be a part of it"

Now, let me tell you about my day...

I went to a another polling place, it was a bit surreal. It had a quarter of the volume as yesterdays place but 4xs more democrat "sample ballot" folks. They were tripping over each other while I quietly waited for my turn. My pitch is refined and killing em; takes me seconds to make a point that is hard to ignore and I've pretty much broken the R vs D barrier. In fact, within an hour I had a few people coming out and visibly giving me the thumbs up and one guy in particular came out and loudly said, "Congratulations, that is the first republican I have ever voted for." :D

Well, you can imagine the faces of the "sample ballot" folk. They were suddenly very interested in BJ Lawson, so I started pitching them. The result is some new Dems for Lawson :) Now, when they did their ballot pitch, instead of pushing the straight slate option, they were explaining how to override a single box and passing the voters off to me with a "you might want to listen to this guy ;)". It was awesome.

The kicker was even better though. There was a local boy there working for a non-partisan school board candidate. He would stay close and if I heard the ol' "I cannot vote republican" he would jump in with a, "Joe, you know me and you know I'm a dyed in the wool democrat. I think you should take another look at what that guy is handing you. Lawson is a good man"

To say the least, it was a good day on the front lines :D

Thank you very much and welcome to the forum. We are causing some serious pain to the establishment here. So based on your success rate rph, how close is this gonna be?

Hard for me to say. I will say it's a hell of a lot closer than David Price (http://www.davidsprice.com) and the establishment would like :D

IMO - a lot will depend on the manning of the polls. We need to hit the voters with targeted soundbites, and polite sincerity, on the way in. Most are dissatisfied in one way or another. And most are willing to hear your spiel. It can be quite rewarding, (especially the first timers that experience voting a split ticket :)) I'm lucky that I have done this same gig in 5 states and am used to it...

We can win this thing. It will be a huge upset and we hold no illusions that it will be just short of miraculous. But if we win it'll be because you all pitched in to help (all three candidates in my sig)...

Thanks, all

OK - just got back from the polls, we are still doing good and turning the swing vote. No sign of any GOP folk out front, but the dem friends I've made are helping.

One guy in particular takes the last position and consistently gives Lawson a plug. (and since he found out I am grassroots supported he has been bringing me lunch). This is his 14th campaign and knows we have a good chance, as long as we can keep the enthusiasm, man the polls, and make the calls (https://www.lawsonforcongress.com/outreach/). We had an interesting conversation today and he explained how David Price (http://www.davidsprice.com/) has managed to remain in office all these years despite his record of supporting corporate/special interests and neglecting his constituents. We talked about the challenges we will face if we win and how to insure future wins regardless of the outcome. He wants us to contact him well in advance of future campaigns...

Next up is our need for volunteers. We really could use more phone bankers and more semi local poll workers for 11/4. We cannot afford to fly people in, we cannot afford to rent cars, we can shuttle people around and I would be happy to share my room with anyone who comes a distance. We will be providing food and water to those that work the full day.

Here is BJ's wife, Jolynn helping make food packs for the volunteers, sorry for the crappy pic quality...

About the only real perk will be an invite to the victory party (and the satisfaction of knowing you have worked for freedom.) I can assure anyone that the act of causing political pain to the establishment is worth more than any perk I have received in my 18mos of campaigning. Please help,

Hey RPH,

I'd love to hear more frequent updates about how the ground-game is going out there. We love to see pictures, videos, and hear stories about campaigning on the ground. If not you, see if BJ can give us a late-night update.

Will do. I was just thinking of a video to make with BJ, at the moment he is pumping up a volunteer who had to deal with one of Price's DC staffers lying at the polls today.

Understand that we are very busy here...

I've been working the early polls here in Orange county for the past 16 days or so, and today, in Carrboro, a member of the Price Campaign shows up. I've only seen a Price campaign member once before (i don't count the Orange County Democratic party ladies). But this member wasn't just an ordinary member but was Price's WIFE!! I believe we are indeed giving them a scare.

One of the ladies from the OCDP said she had been urging the price campaign via emails to combat us at the polls, and a flurry of telephone calls were flying this morning. of course, Mrs. Price didn't show up till 11am on the last day of early voting, and the polls closed at 1pm....

Yes, we are swinging the vote by just being there, and causing some serious political pain to the entire establishment. It will be due to these efforts that we win this thing. Some good news is that over 50% of the voters have been to the polls already and we have had every early voting place covered :) That is why we are strongly requesting help for the additional 175 new locations that will open up for election day. If anyone knows anyone that may want to help. Please call them and have them get in touch with us (http://www.lawsonforcongress.com). We have approximately 40% of the precincts covered at this point and are working our tails off to get as many as possible.

And yes, BJ is still out there pressing flesh

Yeah, this will definitely be the most exciting election night I have ever watched. I really hope the best for all liberty minded candidates.

Things are going well here today, we are having some luck with filling poll slots.

Were closing in on election day, and Id like to thank everyone who has taken our campaign to this point. Special thanks to everyone who has donated to make the campaign possible, volunteered to work the polls during early voting, and those who will be working again on Tuesday.

We have the right message, at the right time. While other campaigns seek to divide the electorate and pit us against each other in the quest for 50% plus one vote, we seek to unite our District with a government that serves the people instead of corporate interests. While other campaigns hide behind personal attacks and divisive partisan rhetoric, we recognize that we are all Americans, and all on the same team to the extent we embrace the freedom and responsibility provided by our Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

This is a critical election, and our job as citizens does not end on November 4th. We are not electing a king on election day. We are electing a president to head our Executive Branch, and Representatives and Senators to serve us in our Legislative Branch. Regardless of the results, this election must be about accountability. It is time to remind our elected representatives that our government derives its power by consent of the governed. Our leaders must be held accountable for their actions, and judged by their ability to advance a federal government that follows the Constitution and serves the people instead of corporate interests.

Here is a comment from BJ's blog,

wishing I were in 4th district! Says:
November 3rd, 2008 at 12:52 pm (http://blog.lawsonforcongress.com/2008/11/02/always-finish-hard/#comment-9125) Sometimes you just KNOW you are in the right place at the right time…..and then events occur that add explanation mark!
I live 90 miles away from Cary, and I can not vote for B. J….so I donated money and encouraged others to do so. Also, for the past two weekends I drove down to his district to help in any way I could. Some folks questoned this long drive considering I could NOT even vote for B. J.
Anyway, Last weekend I passed out constitutions and Lawson literature at an early voting area on 15-501. This past Saturday, I was there again for about and 1 1/2 hours. After being relieved by another Lawson volunteer, myself and another supporter that needed a ride headed over to Lawson campaign headquarters.
As this fellow supporter and I were driving back to HQ, we chatted about how we had come to get involved in BJ’s campaign. Both of us had come by way of Ron Paul. As a matter of fact we had both been at the Rally for the Republic in Minnesota in early Sept.
Interesting, but, not significant you might think? Well, at the Rally there were several young men recognized for their amazing trek. from Wisconsin to Minnesota. These young men had walked from Wisconsin to Minnesota passing out Constituions along the way and spreading the word about Campaigin For Liberty, Ron Paul, ending the fed., etc.
I remember applauding them, as they stood to be recognized. They were seated right in front of me. Two of them were brothers, and their mother was seated in the same row as me only 2 seats away. It was obvious that she was proud of their accomplishment. These men were just part of the total 18,000 + attendees there to hear Ron Paul. I think I may have even shaken their hands. But, their faces….I could never had picked them out of a crowd again in my life.
Well, Michael, the young man I was giving a ride was ONE of those dedicated young men. I felt struck by the IMPACT of this. What was the likelyhood that our paths would ever cross again in just a few short months? So, I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason. I was supposed to be there in Cary, helping BJ and driving 90 miles was nothing compared to what Michael and hs buds have done. You see, Michael traveled here from Hawaii!
We all have to do our part to see that sincere, Constitution loving, honest pepple like B. J. Lawson are elected, to Congress, to the Senate, and also to local positions IF we are ever going to institute change.
Sometimes, we may need a nudge to get us going,……and sometimes we receive it!

:D :D :D

sorry no vids from the office tonight. You might enjoy this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06PkU1FnxCw) if you hadn't seen it (about the lady who stole our materials on the first day of voting)

Today was good, we have about 200 poll workers loaded up and ready to go. There was a steady stream coming through all day. I did a little scheduling, a little calling, and a LOT of coaching/material distribution. Spirits are high. Our key spots are fully covered.

We go into battle tomorrow morning...

May the better man win.

The Obamabots killed us with the straight ticket. 2010 is Lawson's year, when voter turnout will be dramatically lower, and in our favor.

Great work, great efforts all around. You guys kicked ass beyond belief. Endless thank you's.

Too bad guys... you have done your best and fought hard! The timing was just bad. Price basically profited from a massive democratic surge. In 2010 when democrats wont be voting a straight ticket and turnout will be much lower, Lawson has a great chance to succeed. Plus, then he has name recognision, has a base of volunteers and donors and will be better set to capture the district.

Ronpaulhawaii, I want to talk to you now. You are one of the unsung heroes of the liberty movement and I think you have done amazing work! Im proud of all the effort you put into it and the time you spend promoting the cause of liberty. It might not always be succesful, but the work you are doing is invaluable. I enjoy reading about all the things you do and have done, like the bicycle ride across the country and your work for BJ Lawson. I think I must have seen you in real life at the Minneapolis Rally for the Republic. :) I wish you were fighting over in my country for liberty... (I'm a Dutch citizen currently staying in Los Angeles at UCLA)

I have a question for you. You are by now an extremely experienced guy in the ways of campaigning, raising money and pitching a candidate to voters. Are you willing to take some time and write some of you stuff and techniques down? I think that would greatly benefit a lot of people in the liberty movement. As it will benefit me when I will run for my local council election in 1 year. :)
I think your experiences can teach others in the fight for liberty a lot!

I understand that your probably very busy...and right now probably drinking alot to get over this loss... ;) At any rate I just want to let you know that your efforts have really impressed me and are definitely making a difference!

In Liberty,

Moxxar
