Believe it or not, there is actually a fiscal conservative running for the U.S. Senate this year - a guy who will represent South Carolina taxpayers instead of the “go-along-to-get-along” crowd in Washington, D.C.

His name is Bob Conley (a.k.a. “Flat Top Bob”), and if you’ve never heard of him before, that’s not your fault.

Unlike the $4 million special interest-fed war chest of “Republican” Senator Lindsey Graham, Conley’s campaign has raised next to no money.

Which means that unlike the super-slick, feel-good TV ads the Graham campaign has bombarded our airwaves with over the last week, Conley has been forced to rely on good ole’ fashioned stump speeches, word-of-mouth and e-mail blasts to get his message out.

That’s too bad, because if the Democrats (that’s right, Conley is a Democrat) had dropped even half a million dollars into his race, South Carolina’s “senior Senator” could be in serious trouble right now.

As well he should be …

Graham, who made a name for himself railing against Bill Clinton during the 1998 impeachment drama, has been arguably the worst U.S. Senator in the history of this state, choosing time and again to sell South Carolina’s best interests down the river for the good of his liberal allies in Washington.

On tax policy, spending restraint, immigration … pretty much any issue you want to pick … Graham has turned his back on South Carolina taxpayers and voted instead with his “Gang of 14,” a group of K Street sycophants that love to talk about “bipartisanship,” but whose policies have materially weakened our economy and sent our federal deficits and national debt soaring over the last six years.

As if there was ever any doubt where he stood, Graham showed his true colors during the debate over the recent bailout boondoggle, going along with the socialist (and dare we say “failed”) market interventionism prescribed by President George W. Bush and Democratic Congressional leaders.

And not only that, Graham was backing the bailout long before so-called “free market concessions” were added to the plan in a calculated effort to lure “Republican votes.”

Graham is the worst sort of politician, a hackneyed bore who spouts trite, meaningless pablum while his colleague Sen. DeMint has done the heavy thinking (and heavy lifting) to protect South Carolina taxpayers from the barrage of big government that Washington continues to shove down our throats.

Plus, Graham prides himself on being a member of the “inner circle” of what will likely go down as the worst presidential campaign in our nation’s history.

For his part, Conley is unpolished, and certainly no match for Graham in his knowledge of Washington.

Plus his campaign is flat broke, and we have some legitimate questions about his support of the “Fair Tax.”

But in spite of all that, Conley is exactly the kind of person we need in our nation’s capital right now - a guy who isn’t going to whore himself out to the closest TV reporter, or jump on board the latest socialist craze, or tell the South Carolina taxpayers that they’re the ones who should pick up the tab for Washington’s increasingly expensive failure to govern its own insatiable, unsustainable appetites.

To put it simply, Conley’s one of us - whereas Lindsey Graham has demonstrated from the first day he was elected that he’s “one of them.”

Unlike Lindsey’s consistent record of service to self and caving to Washington special interests, South Carolinians have a rare opportunity to elect someone who isn’t afraid of anybody, isn’t going to be fooled by anybody and perhaps most importantly, isn’t owned by anybody.

And for the first time in a long time in this state, voters who classify themselves as Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Libertarians … you name it … all have a choice they can be happy with.

We strongly encourage all of them (and all of you) to vote for Bob Conley on November 4.
