I attend a university, and in Texas, it is required for all students to take political science courses. There have already been a couple weeks of class and I keep finding errors in the instructors information. Like today, we learned that the US is a democracy. He never mentioned the word republic at all. No wonder people are screwed up about government; they can't even tell what kind of government we have. As a bonus, I have no choice but to take this class and pay hundreds of dollars for it.

He also called states sub-national, alluring to the fact that we are not a federal form of government, but a national government with defined sub-sections. At least that was my interpretation; I find this wording annoying. Oh, and political science majors don't really study the constitution anymore. There isn't any class covering that here. It is really a shame.

I need to chalk this place up soon and enlighten some people. The people who write the political opinions in the paper here are ignorant. One said his disappointment from the debate was that no one separated themselves from the pack on the issues. Most of them like Huckabee, and think that since a man seems real, not like a politician, that he must be for the better. I need to start writing for this paper and spread the message and maybe show these guys what a true statesman is. Some of these guys are political science majors; no surprise there.

Do what I did in my political science class and speak up. I really pissed off my confessed Democratic political science professor with my corrections and views. He did get it right on the republic part though, and I didn't have too many complaints, but when I thought he was wrong I let him know it and more importantly the rest of the class as well.

A friend of mine did the same thing in his. He is ex-Marine Iraq war veteran and libertarian filled with a class of bleeding heart liberals who were actually mad at my friend because of his service! He dropped the class only a few days into it because he couldn't take the stupidity.

I am of the firm belief that colleges are a breeding ground for socialism and communism.

Democracy is just government where the people decide. A republic is a type of democracy.

Democracy is mob rule.

A Republic is one with laws that all people must follow...no "deciding". I don't want the people to "decide" that they can take my land and use it for a highway just because they (the "people") have a 51% majority.

I really wanted to speak up, but I find it difficult to suddenly become the focal point of 200 people.

In reference to what university, I attend Texas Tech (for the engineering).

Correct him. Or demand a refund from the dean of the department.

What's worse is that he said the book we are using is full of errors. It was written in part by others in the department. I don't think I would come here for political science (though there may be some sensible people in the deparment).

Yeah, becoming the focal point for that many people takes courage. But just remember it doesn't matter one iota what the hell those people think, just what you think of yourself.

Yeah, that doesn't change the fact that a republic is a form of democracy. This country is a Constitutional republic that claims to defend individual rights.

Damn I would totally ask for a refund like the above poster said. This is horrible, and just remember this is YOUR money that you are spending and you are their customer, just remember to think of it in that regard. If I spend a mere $40 on a dinner out and the dinner is undercooked then I complain and get a refund or compensated in some form. You're paying way more and deserve way better.

Complain for sure, and it doesn't have to be in front of everybody. Do it privately with the teacher or someone above him.

I find it easier to teach through entrapment questions instead of making assertions.

For example, you could raise you hand and ask 'Is there a difference between a democracy and a republic because in Article IV Section IV of the US Constitution it states that we have a republican form of government?'

Make people, especially professors, defend or abandon their assertions. Usually, you can show people the error of their thinking by such practice.

You will notice Ron Paul is masterful at the Socratic method.

On the contrary, and here are some quotes from the founding fathers. I think you are a victim of the socialist (soft word for communist) public education system. :( If a Republic was a type of democracy they would not have set one up or said the following:

"Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide."
-- John Adams

"Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their death.
-- James Madison, Federalist Paper #10

"The experience of all former ages had shown that of all human governments, democracy was the most unstable, fluctuating and short-lived."
-- John Quincy Adams

They set up a Republic, which WOULD defend individual rights if it were followed. Our country has been taken over by commie fascists, or fascist commies, whichever you want to choose.
