The "socialist" label that Sen. John McCain and his GOP presidential running mate Sarah Palin are trying to attach to Sen. Barack Obama actually has long and very ugly historical roots.

J. Edgar Hoover used to call black Civil Rights workers "socialists", so now it's some sort of slur? I'm not a big fan of Hoover but some of them probably were socialists. The sad thing is that they are both socialists...as evidenced by the two yes votes on the $850 billion ripoff (and countless other things).

Maybe because a lot of the black civil rights movement was socialist? It was not meant to be used or seen as a code word.
