When Will Buchanan walked through Uptown Park Ridge Monday morning, he wasn't just taking a leisurely stroll.

The 35-year-old is on his way to New Hampshire, and he has been walking to get there since leaving Cannon Beach, Ore. in April. When he reached Park Ridge this week, Buchanan had already crossed over 2,200 miles of the country.

Buchanan calls his journey "The Walk for Liberty," and he says is walking to call attention to a movement called the Free State Project. The project encourages people to move to New Hampshire in order to experience more freedom and personal liberties.

Supporters of the Free State Project believe New Hampshire allows citizens the more freedoms than any other state in America. They point to the fact that there is no general income tax, general sales tax or capital gains tax on residents; gun laws are among the least restrictive in the nation; and more personal freedoms are allowed, as evidenced by a lack of mandatory seat belt and helmet laws.

"People should live their lives the way they want to, as long as they are not physically hurting someone else," Buchanan said as he headed down Northwest Highway Monday toward Chicago's Edison Park community.

Buchanan quit his job and sold his home near Boston before setting out on the journey. He walks between eight and nine hours each day, covering roughly 20 miles, and his wife Brooke meets him at the end of his destination each day with the couple's RV.

Buchanan's trip is funded largely though personal savings and donations he receives.

Buchanan discusses his journey and thoughts about the Libertarian movement on his web site, willbuchanan.com/blog (http://www.walkforliberty.com).

I've been following the progress of the Free State Project since the day New Hampshire was chosen. Haven't joined yet but find the idea very intriguing. Glad to see y'all getting some press.
