Tomorrow's Diane Rheem call-in show on NPR will be discussing the NSA tomorrow, 10-15. This happens at 11 Eastern, 10 Central. The callers to this show are screened pretty strictly, in my experience, so it pays to be extremely rational while being vetted.

Anyone have the stats on the buget for the NSA? If memory serves me their buget is many multiples of all the other intelligence gathering agencies combined. The NSA is one scary beast.

Supposedly classified:

The size of the Agency's budget is not releasable to the public; however, if the NSA/CSS was considered a corporation in terms of dollars spent, floor space occupied, and personnel employed, it would rank in the top 10 percent of the Fortune 500 companies. It is far from true that NSA/CSS has an unlimited "black" budget, unknown by other government entities. While the budget and size of NSA/CSS are classified, these details are known by the Office of Management and Budget, by both the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI), by the Defense Subcommittees of the Appropriations Committees in both houses of Congress, and by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Resources allocated to NSA/CSS are subject to rigorous examination and approval processes.

Although intelligence funding remains classified, Figure 2 depicts the relative funding levels of the major intelligence agencies and their personnel levels for FY 1996. NSA, CIA, and DIA (and the Service intelligence units) have the largest n umber of personnel; the NRO, on the other hand, has the highest level of funding of any program in the Community, but virtually no federal workforce. Its work is accomplished primarily by contractors in the private sector.
