Voters across the nation have started to cast their ballots in the midst of reports of election integrity concerns, including voter roll purges and ongoing election system problems.
Through all of this, voters are fighting to take back their democracy -- first, by exercising their fundamental right to cast a ballot, and, more than ever, by standing up for their right to a free and fair election.
Voter Action and its partners are continuing our Watch the Vote Project, a citizen-led election protection effort which we piloted in 2006. In 2008, we expanded this effort by monitoring the national 1-866-MY-VOTE-1 hotline. These efforts are in collaboration with the NAACP National Voter Fund, the University of Pennsylvania and its law school, Video the Vote, and state-based democracy organizations across the country.

The 1-866-MY-VOTE-1 hotline is available 24 hours a day in English and Spanish and allows voters to report a problem or barrier they experienced when casting their ballot this election season. Voters can also find their polling place or be connected with local election boards via the hotline. The hotline has received more than 100,000 calls so far this year.
University of Pennsylvania law students and nationwide legal partners assist Voter Action in monitoring incoming calls. Our team has already worked to respond to emerging concerns, and we will continue to address critical problems as they occur before, during and after Election Day.
The information gathered from the hotline catalyzes evidence-based reform to continue to protect and strengthen our elections. In the Pennsylvania 2008 primary, for example, we helped launch a public interest effort to push Pennsylvania's Secretary of State to provide voters with emergency paper ballots when long lines form due to voting machine breakdowns.
