DOW opened today and reached a high of about +150; its now around -100.

Since the close of Oct. 2nd, before the bailout was passed, to the close yesterday, the DOW has lost 1,224.75 or ~11.68%. Although not enough to make the top ten lists of market crashes/corrections, we could quickly be approaching that list.

PPT anyone?

tremendoustie
10-09-2008, 09:58 AM
I'm not saying the PPT doesn't exist, but I think we may be assigning a little too much significance to every blip and bloop. There are reasons other than the PPT that people buy stocks, and without the "PPT" the market would not be zero. People who study these things intensely cannot predict when and what kind of moves will happen, so it might be a bit unrealistic to be completely confident that certain moves could only happen artificially, and to attribute them to the PPT.

this week has had over a 500 point drop each day the market has been open
and both monday and wednesday had an afternoon rally. tuesday had a total
flat out drop. we might see a bottom today manifest or we may again see a very
jittery skittish market. can i opinion on about herbert hoover and his venerable
old age, for when he dies at 90 he sees a market at 1000... and it was at 40 once...

Plunge Protection Team
"Plunge Protection Team" was originally the headline for an article in The Washington Post on February 23, 1997,[2] and has since become a colloquial term used by some mainstream publications to refer to the Working Group.[3][4] Initially, the term was used to express the opinion that the Working Group was being used to prop up the markets during downturns.[5][6] Financial writers for British newspapers The Observer and The Daily Telegraph, along with U.S. Congressman Ron Paul and writers Kevin Phillips (who claims “no personal firsthand knowledge” and is “not interested in becoming a conspiracy investigator”) [7] and John Crudele,[8] have charged the Working Group with going beyond their legal mandate. Claims about the Working Group generally include that it is an orchestrated mechanism that attempts to manipulate U.S. stock markets in the event of a market crash by using government funds to buy stocks, or other instruments such as stock index futures—acts which are forbidden by law. However, these articles usually refer to the Working Group using moral suasion to attempt to convince banks to buy stock index futures. [9]

Former Federal Reserve Board member Robert Heller, in the Wall Street Journal, opined that "Instead of flooding the entire economy with liquidity, and thereby increasing the danger of inflation, the Fed could support the stock market directly by buying market averages in the futures market, thereby stabilizing the market as a whole." His statement has been used to claim that the Fed actually did act in that way. Mainstream analysts call those claims a conspiracy theory, explaining that such claims are simplistic and unworkable.[10][11]

In historical terms, the DJIA is way, WAY overbought still. How low will it go? We'll just have to see. Either way, Wall Street's mess has unfortunately become our mess, i.e. pretext for fascism and enslavement. Hmmmmm. Didn't the Bible have something to say about this unholy marriage of state and money? :) Honestly, the writing is on the wall in big, bold letters.

It's belly up. Rub a Dub, Dud

P.S. I'm an optimist so we might yet find continued mercy as we strive to right the capsized ship of state.
