These are just ideas I have been bouncing around. I don't expect them to be really popular here as some of them don't go far enough from a libertarian perspective, and don't misunderstand, I agree that some of these ideas don't go as far as they should, but at least they might get things moving in the right direction. Please comment on why they are stupid ideas, add your own stupid ideas, etc.
1. Social Security reform - 1st thing is I think for those currently on SS, benefits have to remain the same or a gradual reduction for those who are independently wealthy. Most of these people paid in their entire lives and it is only fair that they receiv the benefits that they paid for. I think that moving forward a few things need to change.
Retirement age needs to be moved to 75. I would say add 1 year to the current retirement age every 3 years.
SS participation should be optional or privatized.
SS, Medicare and Medicaid needs to become more of a "safety net" rather than something you get benefits no matter how well off you are. Taking care of the elderly needs to be the responsibility of families and communites.
2.Absolutely no foreign aid thru government, aid can be administered thru voluntary contributions to private organizations.
3. Absolutely no subsidies for farming, research, or any other business.
4. Return of most US troops from foreign deployments. Any bases left open around the world need to be left operational on these conditions:
Popular vote of the population of the nation where the base is located.
Approval for continued deployment by Congress.
Agreement that all operational costs of said bases be taken over by the government of the country where said bases operate.
5. Complete transparency of Federal spending.
There should be a website where every American can access every dollar spent by the Federal government, the amount originally budgetted and the amount actually spent for every expenditure should be available.
6. No more Federal Reserve. Interest-free currency circulated by Congress.
7. A true balanced budget. Government can only spend what it takes in during the previous year through taxes, tarriffs, etc.
