I am a member of the United Houma Nation. We are a recognized tribe by the State of Louisiana and France, but we still struggle to achieve federal recognition. Recent news says that they are supposed to come up with a decision in early 2009. This is not Congress, and we already know what we can do there. This is much smaller, but this can make a big and direct difference in the lives of simple and hard working people. If you have it in you to help my tribe achieve freedom and sovereignty, please send letters and emails.

There are two ways that you can help:

1. Please contact:
Department of the Interior
1849 C Street, NW
Washington, D.C. 20240
webteam@ios.doi.gov

Ask them to provide federal recognition to the United Houma Nation of Golden Meadow, La.

2. Visit the website at http://www.unitedhoumanation.org and make a donation if you feel inclined to. The tribe gets no help because of its status. Any help in the fight for sovereignty would be appreciated.

Thank you all very much for any help. :)

Can you help the Sothern Cherokee (http://www.southerncherokeenation.net/) achieve recognition as well?

The Federal Government is overly oppressive to native peoples, they should, at least, honor their treaty obligations.

France recognizes you? What?

"Three hundred years earlier the French soldier and explorer d’Iberville smoked the calumet with the Houma Chief at their village near present day Angola.

What was being acknowledged by the French delegation in 1999 was the fact that they were renewing their ties to the same nation, these Houma of 1999 were the same Houma of 1699."

Angola, you are an African tribe? Or is that some place in Louisiana?

I thought so, I had just never heard of it. I wish you luck in achieving recognition. Hopefully your people benefit in some manner, though it might mean the Federal government will make you welfare dependents. I'd hate to see that happen to another tribe.

Dividing into tribes? Isn't that collectivism?

I hear they have nice living quarters in Angola.

They have rodeos and everything there. Anything to boost morale.
