Congressional Progressive Caucus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) is the single largest partisan caucus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congressional_caucus) in the United States House of Representatives (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_House_of_Representatives), and works together to advance progressive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_progressivism) issues and causes.

The CPC was founded in 1991 by the independent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_(politician)) Congressman Bernie Sanders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Sanders) of Vermont (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermont), who remains a member as Senator. It represents about a third of the House Democratic Caucus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_Democratic_Caucus) (with 71 members). Of the twenty standing committees of the House (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_House_committees), eleven are chaired by members of the CPC.

Ideology
According to their website, the CPC advocates "universal access to affordable, high quality healthcare," fair trade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_trade) agreements, living wage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_wage) laws, the right of all workers to organize into labor unions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_union) and engage in strike actions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strike_action) and collective bargaining (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collective_bargaining), the abolition of significant portions of the USA PATRIOT Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_PATRIOT_Act), the legalization of gay marriage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage), strict campaign finance reform (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campaign_finance_reform) laws, a complete pullout from the war in Iraq (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_invasion_of_Iraq), a crackdown on free trade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_trade) and corporate welfare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporate_welfare), an increase in income tax (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_tax) on the wealthy, tax cuts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_cut) for the poor, and an increase in social welfare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_welfare) spending by the federal government.

Supporting organizations
An array of national progressive organizations will work to support the efforts of the caucus, including the Institute for Policy Studies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institute_for_Policy_Studies), The Nation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nation) magazine, MoveOn.org (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MoveOn.org), National Priorities Project (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Priorities_Project), Jobs with Justice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jobs_with_Justice), Peace Action (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_Action), Americans for Democratic Action (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americans_for_Democratic_Action), and Progressive Democrats of America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_Democrats_of_America). Also co-sponsoring the kickoff event were the NAACP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAACP), ACLU (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACLU), Progressive Majority (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_Majority), League of United Latin American Citizens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_of_United_Latin_American_Citizens), Rainbow/PUSH Coalition (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow/PUSH_Coalition), National Council of La Raza (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Council_of_La_Raza), Hip Hop Caucus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_Hop_Caucus), Human Rights Campaign (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Rights_Campaign), Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Association_of_Farmworker_Opportun ity_Programs&action=edit&redlink=1), and the National Hip Hop Political Convention (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Hip_Hop_Political_Convention).
