Excerpt:

As he did so often in other online polls against different oppoents during the primary season, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) scored an overwhelming win against Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) in The Punditty Project’s Hypothetical Presidential Poll, which was open to online voters Sept. 29 through Oct. 7.

With 1,102 votes cast, Paul (as GOP nominee, not a third party candidate) won a decisive 79 to 20 percent victory over Obama, the Democratic nominee. Paul received 870 votes to Obama’s 228. Four voters chose “other.”

Some people reading this analysis might scoff, saying none of this matters. As to the effect it will have on the 2008 presidential election, they are right. But in the bigger picture – on such matters as the ideological and moral direction the Republican Party will take in the wake of what is shaping up to be a loss in November – the phenomenon these poll numbers is measuring could have an enormous effect when it comes to determining the GOP's nominee in 2012.

Sure, it's just another Internet poll that Ron Paul will probably dominate, but could you imagine if he somehow managed to get something like a million votes between now and Oct. 6, when the poll closes? With so much political coverage at every level of media - and especially in the wake of the fakeout (I mean bailout) - a huge Paul victory in this admittedly unscientific poll could get some attention. That attention might lead to an actual article or two or three, or even a network news report, on some of the Sound Money ideas Dr. Paul has been espousing for decades.

Maybe. Or maybe not. But if nothing else, it's a fun poll.

Vote in the matchup that should have been: Ron Paul vs. Barack Obama

From The Punditty Project's "Notes on the concept behind this poll":

"One can be fairly certain that rather than using soundbite lines about “not being elected Miss Congeniality,” a GOP-nominated Paul would have maintained a serious demeanor and talked straight with the American people. Instead of finding himself in the easier position of correcting McCain’s demonstrably inaccurate assertions, Obama would have been forced to engage in a debate with Paul on the merits of their respective approaches to rebuilding a strong economy."

The poll is still open...let's try for a heavy turnout between now and Monday afternoon, when it closes!

Please help Punditty spread the word...he is new at blogging (started a little over of month ago on a whim; kind of like Sarah Palin beginning her VP campaign, when you stop to think about it!) and is participating in the allvoices.com Excellence in Citizen Media Incentive. See link at the bottom of this message to learn more.

The Punditty Project will follow up with a report on the results no later than Oct. 8. Consistent online poll support for Dr. Paul seems to indicate that even though his candidacy for the GOP nomination came up short this year, the Ron Paul Revolution is very much alive. Thus far, the results of this poll give no reason to doubt that assumption.

A brief analogy: Joe Frazier beat Muhammad Ali in their first championship fight after 15 bruising rounds, but it was Frazier, not Ali, who spent a week in the hospital afterwards. Frazier later lost to George Foreman, but the crafty Ali regained the championship by KOing Foreman in 1974.

Not to compare McCain to Joe Frazier (Frazier had a champion's heart, after all), but I think you get my meaning. The idea of a "John McCain Revolution" would be laughable if it weren't so frightening. Te Ron Paul Revolution is already in training for the next fight, perhaps with a title shot as soon as the next go-round - even if Dr. Paul himself is not the nominee in 2012.
