View Full Version : It's time to go strategic with our bailout-opposition

It's time to be strategic about our bailout-opposition tactics. We need to focus our efforts on those votes that are most likely to make a difference, namely those Congresspeople who could go one way or the other with a little nudge. We need to dig up all the sources we can to find which Congresspersons and Senators are clearly on the fence and/or undecided on the bailout and focus our efforts on convincing them to oppose it.

Reply to this thread with some sort of media/article/source that shows certain elected officials' indecision regarding the bailout, and I'll add their name and contact info to the high-priority contact list here:

Asked if was ready to switch from no to yes, Rep. Steve LaTourette, R-Ohio, said: "Not yet, but it's getting there."

John Shadegg opposed the bailout the first time around, but now says he's leaning toward voting for it.

Rep. John Shadegg of Arizona, a leading conservative who voted no on Monday, told CNN Wednesday he's "strongly leaning" toward voting for the plan.

Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito is a member of the House Financial Services Committee. She voted against the bill that her party’s administration is pleading with Congress to pass. She says Congress hasn’t had enough time to consider the bill. Also, West Virginians contacting her office are overwhelmingly against the bailout.

“I think people have a lot of skepticism about Wall Street in that they were engaged in risky investments, and it’s not the fault of West Virginia taxpayers that these institutions are in the predicament that they’re in. I think that people were just cautioning me to go slower and really consider what we were doing in terms of committing $700B of taxpayer dollars to this bailout,” Capito said.

At the same time, Capito’s also heard from West Virginians who are concerned about the worth of their retirement funds that are invested in the stock market. Capito supports doing something, and she has suggestions for improving the bill.

Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Lehigh Valley, said the Senate economic rescue plan is an improvement over the House version he helped defeat Monday.

Dent would not say whether he intends to vote for the Senate version of the bill when it comes before the House.

"The changes that have been made so far are positive and are helpful," Dent said Wednesday afternoon. "I will seriously consider it. I want to see the final changes."

Among the changes Dent likes is a provision that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. insure bank deposits up to $250,000. Now deposits are insured up to $100,000.

"Time is limited," Dent said about Congress' window for passing a financial rescue plan. "It's important we make some necessary changes."

We have one SC rep that voted Yes on the first one but might vote no on this version due to all the extra stuff added on.
I posted this in my earlier post about calling the SC reps, but figured he should be targeted to change to a No.

Here is his info and my notes from this morning:

SC5 Spratt, John M. Jr. SC 5th 225-5501 - Was for first version but is leaning against due to
additional items being added to the new bill. Could go either way.

Voted yes and is a deeply entrenched encumbent who votes with Bush's will on everything. We've called her office until we're blue in the face and we're keeping the pressure on but what really needs to happen is to shut her office phone down completely.

Both MO Senators voted yes, too.

I posted on another thread but will put it here also. Work cut out. I picked up on these names searching this am.

CRep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.), Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), and Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) have all expressed openness to the new version, and others will likely feel pressured by the "yes" votes of their home state senators.california's David Dreier said Thursday morning that "I hated'' the initial version of the bill but that he plans to vote for it this time around.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) was similarly unpersuaded. "The Senate measure has changed my position from 'No' to 'Heck no,' " he said. "With the Senate amendment, the bailout has gone from bad to worse, $105 billion more in public debt worse."

R-Minn., who voted against the bill Monday, said he was taking a second look.
The inclusion of parity, tax extenders and the FDIC increases has caused me to reconsider my position," Ramstad told the Times. "All three additions have greatly improved the bill."

Rep. Steve King, an Iowa Republican, said the new version of the bill contains a biodiesel tax credit he has championed, but he still plans to vote against the measure again.

the bill now includes a provision to boost insurance coverage of mental illness, a priority of Rep. Jim Ramstad, a Minnesota Republican, who voted against the bailout bill Monday. It also includes a tax benefit for bicycle commuting sought by Rep. Earl Blumenauer, an Oregon Democrat, also a "no" vote on Monday. And there's an extension of the solar tax credit, a priority of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, who has said that she wants to make her state the "Silicon Valley of solar energy."

The tax breaks and accounting rule changes for Hollywood were seen as aimed at two Southern California Democrats - Reps. Adam Schiff and Brad Sherman - who voted against the plan. Sherman, who led the defection of a group of Democratic skeptics, insisted he would not be enticed to vote for the rescue plan.

Another strategy is to come up with amendments in the House so that if one gets passed the Senate needs to have another vote. Stalling is a good strategy too.

With the strategery in mind I would like to add a few things.

There has been a viral understanding among the American populace that has voted no confidence in our leadership. This has come to my attention as I have seen an increase in those who support RP online and off line. With this much support I think it is time Ron Paul Re-announced his candidacy for President.

With the Grassroots behind him, there would be no stopping the Revolution.
I understand there isn't much time to win the Presidency but you have to be hopeful that with more people stepping up, just by announcing that he is still running will make a buzz through the media and they will interview him just to ridicule him and further polarize the nation. We all came here because of this man, we all supported him in one way or another and then watched as he stepped down.

I say he rise up from the ashes of a forgotten time and renew our faith, renew the fight, till the bitter end.

With this idea in hand I would assume that in the next few months we could organize and get the vote out to those who need to hear what this man has to say.

For once in my life I feel the desperate cry of a nation wanting change, wanting to get their lives back and one man who can ultimately do it.

Now i Understand that there would be an even harder time to get everything together to get this done but I know in my heart that we can do it.

I ask that all who agree write to Ron Paul and ask that he step back up and finish what he started. The people of this country do not just demand it, but desperately need his leadership in a time like this.

So if you are willing and have the guts to fight the establishment to the bitter end, and support a fringe candidate no matter the battle, then come november 4th, My birthday, we can celebrate like no other nation in history has, by voting all at once that we reject the status quo and will no longer bow to their will.

Voter fraud aside, I still think we can do it, we have the strength the numbers and the failing economy on our side. Educate, populate and vote for RON PAUL.

That is all. truly my friends. (funny enough if RP were to ever say my friends he would be the only one i believe.)

Libertas Praesidium

[I have three 6 foot Ron Paul Revolution signs, a new meetup in my home town, a mayoral race, and freedom to fight for.]

There can be no greater cause than to fight for what you know you are about to lose, it takes some living in servitude to understand this but please always remember

Your life is yours, Rise up and live it.
