coin shops if you're lucky, might have it in 1 gram increments and offer more privacy. But many are out of stock of everything. 1/4 oz, and 1/2 are also available. However you will pay more of a premium on smaller denomitions that larger ones.

I think Krugerrands are the cheapest coin you can get, and it's popular enough to be readily accepted. You will pay a bit of a premium on the 1/10th ounce or other fractional-ounce coins compared to the full ounce though. I can't give advice on anything else because coins are all I have dealt with, not bars or anything like that. Maybe someone else can weigh in on other items.

yep, what he said. Gold Eagles are higher priced, and gold is gold. If it is in a coin or bar and sold by a reputable dealer, it will be able to resold as such.
Check your local coin shop. Don't worry about not knowing much, they can spot a new coin purchaser a mile away, but that's alright. Your FRN's are as acceptable as anyone elses. :D
Stay clear of numistmatic coins, which are anything more rare and are higher priced collectibles. You are probably looking for a hedge against inflation, and only looking for buillion coins.
My 2 cents worth.

check out swiss francs, American Eagles, and whatever major dealers are pushing.

Again, compare your local dealer to eBay. But from what I heard of your dealer, they might be good.

The pawn shop wouldn't be a bad place to check honestly. Gold rings, earrings, anything gold, great investments. Once the New World Order beings their plan of forced depression this would serve as liquid barter. :D

Other options would be the the 1/10 ounce Krugerrands or something like these small coins:

I would buy pre-1964 90% silver coin (which is also "legal tender")...it is alot easier to buy things you might need in the future than to PLUNK down an ounce of gold (cause how are you going to get "change" for that amount of wealth??)

But I guess it depends on how much MONEY you want to convert (if a whole lot then Platinum or Gold takes up alot less space to move around and hide).

May be a good time to buy gold, who thinks this $700 bill might cause inflation?

Jewelry and things in a pawn shop may be difficult to know the exact quantity of gold in them. They may be 18k or they may be just plated. Or even an alloy that looks like gold. Coins and bars are better because the content is known.

I'm fond of the Pamp Suisse and Credit Suisse bars in the assay cards. The premiums aren't that bad normally, and I think being sealed in its assay card gives it reliability.

I'm kicking myself. My dealer had 3 one-ounce gold eagles last Thursday, and I only had enough money on me to get 1. I went after the price dropped to the same dealer, and also the largest dealer in town. Both sold out :( Good luck finding any.

Here are the options for cheap gold

1) http://bullion.nwtmint.com/gold_grambars.php
2) http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/noyritus
3) pawn shop

usually you pay a little higher premium for the smaller gold bars and coins, Silver may be better option for most. Ebay is your friend.

The best way to get cheap gold now is to use MS Cashback and buy from ebay. There are 3 forms of gold that I really like, all 1 oz, Gold American Eagle (GAE), Canadian Maple and Krugerrand with the Krugs being the cheapest and GAE the most popular among Americans. I personally collect GAE and Maple because Maple in Canada is not taxed, but all three of them are fantastic instruments. GAE sells easily.

I am selling a gold american eagle for $990 plus Microsoft Cashback of $200. You will get 1 oz of gold for $790. There's no way anybody can get a GAE that cheap. I have been buying for myself with two hands full. check the "feedback as a buyer" in my ebay rating and you'll see i already bought at least 1 gold eagle and 1 maple.

If you don't feel confident buying from me, just read the MS Cashback thing in my listing, then buy from any other ebayers you feel comfortable with. Just be careful because some of the sellers don't actually have the gold. they wait until many have placed order, then go ahead order from their dealers.

One thing on the cashback, make sure you use the same email address for both ebay and paypal accounts.

Here's the link to my listing.

It works if you follow the instructions. Chomp Chomp:

What about the 10th commandment if the gov't demands all gold to be turned in under threat of fine or imprisonment?

Refer to 8th commandment. If the government orders all gold and/or silver in your possession is it in your possession if it's buried on land not yours? Just remember the gps location.

I'd recommend anyone stay away from buying metals on eBay unless they are...

a.) an experienced metals buyer
and
b.) an experienced ebay shopper.

Otherwise, it's just waaaaay too easy to get ripped off.

It can go either way. Auctions are sometimes sold at losses by seller.
