Few storage questions

Ok maybe just one. What is the best way to store flower, rice and the sort? Any good websites for food storage in general?

From what I understand, flour doesn't store well and it is better to store wheat and have a mill to make flour from it as needed.

I've opted to store oatmeal instead of flour. Flour requires a lot of processing to turn it into something edible whereas with oatmeal you can just add water and make gruel and tons of other things. If you can get your hands on an old timey Irish or Scottish cookbook you'll see what I mean.

Also, invest in a foodsaver machine. I got one at WalMart for $120. Package whatever size amounts of rice and beans you'd normally use-- say 2 cups of rice. You can buy silica packets to put in the bags before sealing and they will last even longer.

AND I don't use much flour, the only thing I make with flour is pancakes. I use amaranth seed for any breading that I do, just crunch it in the blender as I need it.


I'll be growing it from seed for the first time next year. Amaranth is one of the"old" grains and my system handles it much better than flour.

I use so little, that year's supply fits into a baggie, I actually keep it in small spice jars.

In my household we bake like mad, so flour is a must. I went out and bought a grain mill, so I was thinking I might just go and get a huge batch of wheat berries, seeing as they store indefinitely.
