The movie The Fog of War gives eleven life lessons from Robert McNamara, the Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War. I was struck by his first lesson “Empathize with your enemy”

I do not think there is any politician who shows he knows this lesson better than Ron Paul when he analyzes the ‘War on Terror.”

The movie is recommended. Without confronting the question directly it illustrates the extent to which the simple and widely accepted “Domino Theory” propelled years of foreign policy mistakes and 58,000 American deaths.

A memorable moment comes near the end of the movie when McNamara meets with an enemy commander long after the conflict is over and realizes how very different the two had perceived each other's intentions.

Excellent movie. Fascinating portrait of McNamara as well as a good primer on how the architects of war think, and how easily they can mislead us and themselves.
