The Independence Party of New York has endorsed John McCain for president, “the first time New York’s third-largest party has backed a major-party presidential candidate,” the AP reports. The party backed Ross Perot in 1996, John Hagelin in 2000, and Ralph Nader in 2004. Chairman Frank MacKay said the party, which has about 355,000 registered voters statewide, “sees McCain as an independent thinker.”
