View Full Version : Commission on Presidential Debates shuts off phone.

abc123
09-19-2008, 02:34 PM
Supporters for open debates have been bombarding them with phone calls all day. Now, they've shut their phone off as of a few hours ago and are refusing to take more calls.

Please call them and leave them a message. You can remain anonymous, just leave them a message please.

202-872-1020

Urge them to:
- Open up debates to Chuck Baldwin, Bob Barr, Ralph Nader, and Cynthia McKinney (or any combination thereof).
- Make their secret contract between the McCain and Obama campaigns public.
- Develop a more objective and reasonable criteria for inclusion in the Presidential debates.

Please keep putting the pressure on these guys. Let's shut em down all next week with phone calls if we have to.

Just did my part.

Now it's time to do yours!

Yeah, you.

It's really easy right now, because all you have to do is leave a message.

Here's an example of something you can read:

Hi, my name is (your name).
I'm a voter who lives in (your location).
I'd really like to see (candidates) in the presidential debates.
Also, I'd like to ask you to please publicize the debate contract between John McCain and Barack Obama.
Thank you.

We must keep pressure on them. This is a battle.

If they've turned off their phones, move the battle to Obama and McCain's phones. Demand the Republican and Democratic candidates DIRECTLY to include the other candidates who are on most ballots. Enough with the middleman!

Ditto on the "mailbox full" message, however, if you wait a second after that and hit *8 you can go to a directory to look up the extensions of people working there. Now just have to figure out who the head honcho is then their box can get filled up too... :-P

How does the menu work? Are we just picking a random name and leaving a message, or is there a particulat mailbox we're targeting?

mconder
09-20-2008, 08:35 AM
They have more than one phone number going in there. As one gets shut off we need to find another for some high ranking official.

Bruno
09-20-2008, 09:09 AM
Let's keep this bumped and fill up all the voicemail boxes!

How does the menu work? Are we just picking a random name and leaving a message, or is there a particulat mailbox we're targeting?

When it says "Mailbox full" :

1) Press *8.
2) Press *2
3) Press 2 (allowing two digits to be entered to find someone in the directory)
4) Press any two digits. The auto-router will send it to someone's voicemail.

Viola! Leave a message.

Alright everybody, I've gone through the entire directory and there are only three people that can be brought up, here's how you reach them:

Call 202-872-1020
It will say that you can't leave a message because the mailbox is full.
Press *8
Press *2

Press 23# to reach Adam Grog
Press 24# to reach Casey
Press 62# to reach an unidentified female who will "pass your concerns along"

Out of all the possible combinations you can put in at the directory lookup stage those are the only ones that work...I tried em all. :-)

So, let's leave these three nice people some friendly messages.

teshuah
09-20-2008, 10:18 AM
fill all of them up... everyone working there needs to know. If only one person hears it and doesn't tell anyone in the office what good does that do? Maybe the right person will become annoyed enough that they'll break... and not keep their mouth shut anymore and go to the media to quiet us...

okay, I'm a wishful thinker

The point is to make these people so irritated by continuously flooding their mailboxes with pro open-debate messages that they complain about it in some way and the media picks up on it. For example, I've left them 2 messages, one yesterday and one today. If I do this everyday until they get so annoyed they do something ridiculous, I'll win because the media will pick up on it and our message will get out there. It will cause controversy. That's what we need over this issue - controversy. Not apathy and an oblivious citizenry. Something bold must be done to make this an issue. Right now it's a non-issue to the average Joe and we need controversy to bring it to the limelight.

For me, I'm glad we're all getting together to take positive political ACTION. This is great!

Remember, the first step towards liberty is getting people to listen to our message. With 40+ million people watching, the debates would do it.

Hit them where it hurts - question their non-profit status if they play partisan politics.

As a nonprofit organization, they can NOT be a partisan sponsor of any candidate over another without risking that non-profit corporation tax exemption status. They seem to get around this by using polls to exclude minor candidates - but then they need to be showing some transparency of what they are doing.

http://www.debates.org/pages/about.html

"The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) was established in 1987 to ensure that debates, as a permanent part of every general election, provide the best possible information to viewers and listeners. Its primary purpose is to sponsor and produce debates for the United States presidential and vice presidential candidates and to undertake research and educational activities relating to the debates. The organization, which is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) corporation, sponsored all the presidential debates in 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004."

What is odd is I can't find an email address for this nonprofit . . .

At this first cursory look, they do NOT seem to be fulfilling all their requirements of their tax exemption privileged status - which should be questioned.

Eric21ND
09-20-2008, 04:46 PM
Another thing you guys need to do after trolling their voicemail is sign up for open debates. The Citizens Debate Commission that they purpose is rather interesting.

We really need to start handing out literature about the Open Debates movement and build for a future takeover just like the Republican party takeover thats looming...fight the system on two fronts. :)

We should try to get someone there in person.

For some reason, I couldn't find their address on the website (http://www.debates.org). I did a reverse lookup of the phone number.

Do we have anyone on the boards who lives in Washington, D.C. and has some free time on his hands?

Need to join Nader's efforts in this as well. There are A LOT of groups who want to see the debates opened up. I think this year more than any in the past - it is possible to make some real noise on this issue...

Open Debates is teaming up with nine other pro-democracy organizations to issue the following press release today demanding the release of the debate contract:

looks like the debates.org mail servers are hosted by postini.com (see dig results below - psmtp.com maps to servers hosted by postini.com)

also, jb@debates.org seems to be associated with Janet H. Brown (Executive Director of CPD). don't know if it's accurate, or if the email account is active, or even looked at for that matter - so take it for what it's worth.

11 - Michael Brewer
12 - General Comments?

Those are the 3 I tried. I'm sure there's more - just guess more numbers.
