Hmm, could have sworn I posted in this thread yesterday.

Anyways, thanks for the info. I thought my .22 wasn't good for much beyond small game, but I guess I was wrong. I went and bought a couple of bricks of ammo and a second banana clip.

A high powered air rifle is also a good idea, no powder needed, can make your own pellets and bb's all day long for next to nothing AND can kill many things if needed.

I do agree though that a .22 is a great all around weapon to own.

I keep going back to a pellet gun simply because of not needing to provide an accelerator and or powder, casings and so on PLUS it is pretty quiet especially when adding a silencer.

I've preached this for a while--specifically about .22LR. Not painful to practice, whether you are referring to kick, noise or cost. Plenty deadly if you're accurate and plenty accurate enough to be deadly. And one type of ammo suffices for rifle, target pistol and concealed carry.

Good stuff!

And .22 ammo is probably going to the stay the most readily available ammo

In times of hunger a stick or a rock in the hands of a determined person will net some food.
A .22 will surely make life easier and be MUCH easier on the wallet.

The .22 should be a round for all your practice usage and will work fine for small game, but I feel that an additional rifle, with a little more "Punch" is also needed, for the bigger "Stop Now" type game.
Unless you want to track what you shot for 5 miles and MIGHT catch up with it.

Two legged or otherwise.

I wanted to post a link to some ammo I found:

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productnumber=218194

Standard volocity .22 ammo is ~1150-1250 fps. This stuff is rated at ~1750fps!!!

I was checking out the reviews and was pretty darned impressed with what people were saying about it. Anyone ever tried Aguila Super Maximum 22LR 30 Grain Plated Lead HP ammo before?

He's using subsonics with that. That could come in quite handy.

A silenced special barrel MARK III is quite common in special ops inventory.

I think it would be important to note that one should not consider carry the .22 for defense. Just in case this somehow came out of the thread.

I think it is good for training and small game.

60 Grain? In a .22?! Anyone shoot this?

Chosen, I ordered some of those 60 grain subsonics, and also the Super Maximum HP rounds. They also have a 40 grain 1400+ fps round called the Interceptor that looks awesome. They only have it in SP, though.

Absolutely.

The advantage of the .22 is it's accurate, you can carry a million rounds, and you can dispatch most four-legged critters with a well placed shot. For a survival situation, a good subsonic .22 round would be perfect for collecting food without alerting the whole region to your presence. It's quiet enough that the sound won't travel to the next county over, and in a wooded environment you could easily take birds, squirrels, coons, snakes, rats, etc., for food.

I've shot the 60 SSS. It is really dirty, needs a fast twist barrel to stabilize the long bullet or else it will keyhole, and it is really loud in semi-autos because of the short casing. The casing is extracted from the chamber before all the powder is done burning so there is a lot of action noise and flames. It works fine for me though but I don't see it as being any better than regular standard velocity.

I would think if you are in a "survival" situation the ATF hopefully wouldnt exist and a homemade* sound suppressor would help out as well with some subsonic

I walked into a local gun store today and saw a deal I could live with on a 10-22. Everything in the pic, including the case for $250 out the door. Ive been in love with this particular type Ruger stock for a while since I had seen it on a Model 77 MII. I like the stainless. Its used after bartering a bit and checking it out with a scope light I took it home. I really didn't have anything suitable for protecting a garden from varmits. This should do it.

I have this and a Walther P22 that I've tamed a few quirks on. All-in-all I'm happy to have something on hand .22

Something I was going to ask. Its a bit of a mystery serial number. It starts with

250-

Its not on the Ruger serial history list under 10/22's that I can see

It goes from 249- strait to 251-

nm.. realize the gaps for what they are.

thats a pretty good deal considering the "stainless" 10/22's are 249 new.

I have a couple myself, be sure to pick up an extended mag release lever and an auto bolt release. they have cheap kits on ebay for 22 shipped.
