DENVER - Barack Obama partied with Hollywood celebrities Tuesday night and with the help of Oscar-winning singer and actress Barbra Streisand raised an eye-popping $9 million for his presidential campaign and the Democratic Party.

The night was split into two glitzy events, a reception and dinner costing $28,500 each at the Greystone Mansion, followed by entertainment by Streisand at the nearby Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. About 250-300 people were expected at the dinner and about 800 at the entertainment, which cost $2,500 a ticket.

Dinner guests seen by reporters, or noted by waiters, included Will Ferrell, Jodie Foster, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Lee Curtis and DreamWorks founders Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg.

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Where there's Barbra, there's trouble!

I'm confused. Doesn't McCain-Feingold (unconstitutionally) limit contributions to $2300 per individual per election cycle? How can people get away with writing $28,500 checks or even $2500?

RP's record is for a Primary race.

If there were actually fair elections and a free press in the US, Ron would be the nominee and would smash every attendance and fundraising record for a Presidential election campaign ever.

Those records would stand for all time because as POTUS Ron would bring sound money that would mean much lower prices from then on.

I'm pretty sure he broke that record a long time ago with some online fundraiser.

Yes, it does.

I'm guessing the Obama campaign is going to be transferring the extra $25.5k to the DNC, who is really strapped for cash relative to the RNC.

It was a DNC fundraiser. $28,500 is the maximum that an individual can donate to a party in a calendar year.

It gets complicated, (natch, because the government is involved.)

That's bogus. $28,500 is the individual limit per calendar year to a National Party Committee not to the Presidential candidate.

All of Paul's contributions on the record setting days were bound by the $2300 per candidate limit.

To fairly compare the two, you'd have to strip out the part destined for the Democratic Party Committees and not to Obama's campaign. But then fairness is often too much to ask of the establishment.

it was going to happen. who cares?

we're still the only ones to do it without an official campaign / planning from the campaign

Its different when you're the nominee of a party rather than just running to become the nominee.

Pssh. It took Barack The Messiah Obama this long to break a lil old country doctor/quiet congressman from Texas's fundraising record?

Meh. We'll take back the record in 2012.

So if that's the case it was not an "Obama" fundraiser, it was a DNC fundraiser. Ron Paul's record should still hold, then...no?

Doesn't count.

His is post primary ours was pre-primary. Big difference since most people don't donate during the primaries while everyone donates after the candidate has been selected. If RP won the GOP nomination he would too be breaking all WORLD RECORDS old and even future ones.
