Organization celebrates our nation's Constitution

Herald Tribune (Sarasota, Florida)

In anticipation of Constitution Day today, members of the John Birch Society (http://www.jbs.org/), Sarasota Chapter (http://usconstitution.meetup.com/15/), held a celebration Saturday at the Sarasota Fire Department Station 2, in the Arlington Park neighborhood.

"Constitution Day is the day the Constitution was ratified," explained Maddy Nelson, chair for the event. "By holding this on Saturday we thought we could attract more students and families."

Manatee Community College freshman David Van de Bogart, 18, accompanied his grandmother Kathy Bolam to the event both because, "I didn't want her to go alone and, yes, I am interested in learning more about the Constitution."

Each attendee received a book with the words of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and updated amendments, along with various other brochures, literature and information packets.

"We try to get as much information out there as possible to educate the people," said Nelson, "at the same time welcoming the public to join us."

The nonpartisan, nonpolitical society is dedicated to educating people of their constitutional rights "that are protected in theory in the Constitution, rather than in action by our government," said Jerry Ripo.

The short film "Overview of America (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6732659166933078950)" was previewed at the event and can also be viewed on YouTube.

The John Birch Society meets at 6 p.m. on the second Monday of the month at the Gulf Gate Library.

I hope many other groups make the news as well. I'll have my eye out.
