The DOW is only 30 companies right? Wouldn't the S&P 500 be a more accurate index?

Haha. After being enlightened on many issues including economics for only 4 or so years, I still need to learn a great deal more about the markets and indexes. Is my poll possibly a poor choice of an index?

not poor choice.... but the media always cares about the DOW when it is indeed that S&P that matters. It's hard to guess what will happen because markets today like stupidity and the leverage makes the stupidity seem real.

:D I honestly have no idea, I'm learning myself. Besides, with FauxNews (current headline, "Dad charged for leaving 11-year old son at McDonalds after fight"), who needs indexes at all?

Seriously though, I saw on Bloomberg this morning that while today the markets are going to get nailed, they were expecting a 20% rally by the end of the day. They were saying that Hurricane Ike spared U.S. refineries. Who knows, it all sounds like magical conjuration to me.

I think it will rally, rise.

Shit is irrational these days. Everyone is loopy, and everything is upside down.

Are we talking today only, this week, this month, this year?

I would be niehter suprised to see us hit 10K on the DOW, nor would I be suprised to see 14K. There is no question which direction it should go, but people are stupid.

Good call guys! The majority of us were correct, although I thought it'd be around 300.

The S&P 500 index is the best index... especially the way they weight the Dow makes it really weird. But the S&P also fell about 5% today (actually as a % more than the Dow). This is very fascinating.

I just closed my account at WAMU, stock to $2, ouch. I know it is FDIC insured but I didn't want to wait on the government for my insurance money.

Economic collapse is not something to celebrate.

It's more like trying to make light of a situation that surely should drive you to insanity.

It's going to become a 200.5k

On the plus side: toxic cat food from China will probably continue to be an affordable meal option in your retirement.
