Good Article and look at the comments

this is one of my favorites

I agree that we get the government we deserve, but at this point in time, the system is so distrorted that what we really want/need is not being put on the table for us to choose. Both parties has finally discovered that our voting public is not very smart and we are susceptible to tricks. The parties offer us a platform of platitudes and vaguaries rather than concrete plans. Trivial issues like gay marriage, flag lapels, the pledge of allegiance, flag burning and abortion are the topics upon which we are allowed to decide elections. Difficult issues like energy policy, the national deficit, civil liberties, education and foreign policy are ignored because they would require long-term commitments to costly programs. As a result, we choose our leaders on the basis of their platitudes on the fluff issue that have no real consequences on our quality of life. The major issues are decided on the basis of money from corporate interests and the electorate really gets no say into how ther are resolved.
