in a recent speaking engagement/book signing Jesse Ventura asked "Where are the musicians" speaking out against the current government like those he admired during the Vietnam War? Well, I just ran across an entry in Paste Magazine that names the "5 Biggest Libertarian Musicians"... Does anybody know what these musicians have been doing lately to get the word out??

We believe in equal time here at Paste, so after naming the biggest Republican and Democratic musicians earlier this week, I thought I'd look into who's supporting third-party candidates. The libertarians claim some fine musicians, including the first one I ever interviewed back in 1990—Mojo Nixon.

5 Biggest (or most committed) Libertarian Musicians

1. Krist Novoselic
The Nirvana bassist was elected to the state legislature as a Democrat, but also acknowledged his support of libertarian-leaning Republican candidate Ron Paul.

2. Billie Joe Armstrong
The Green Day frontman hasn't been vocal in his support, but according to several sources on the Advocates for Self Governance, he's registered as a Libertarian in the state of California.

3. Dwight Yoakum
The country star spoke to the New York Post in 1999 about "libertarianism, the pure Jeffersonian ideal."

4. Robbie Fulks
Reason magazine spoke the Nashville songwriter in 2000 and said he referred to himself as a libertarian.

5. Neil Peart
Rush's drummer was influenced early on by the objectivist writings of Ayn Rand, and described himself to JewsRock.org as a "left-learning libertarian."

Dwight Yoakum is a libertarian!! That's awesome. We need to find more libertarian country singers, since that is the only form of music I like. There are maybe 10 songs outside of Country and Southern Rock I like.

John Popper should take the place of Billie Joe.

I'm not sure if he was technically a libertarian, but I'll be darned if Johnny Cash didn't have all of the familiar traits; namely, lionizing non-conformism and individualism to a degree of fervor that was almost religious, speaking out for prisoners' rights and writing lyrics about the inequities of the criminal justice system, and making more than a few passing references to imperialism, brutality, and the warfare state.

I was gonna mention Krist Novoselic, I saw during the campaign, either late last year or early this year he donated to Ron Paul, I believe. But I haven't seen many musicians speaking out at all, for libertarianism or against tyranny...then again the only musicians that get media attention are the ones with songs about Obama (Ludacris). Not exactly shocking..

Thank goodness they put Peart on there, I'd have to take a flamethrower to this post if it didn't.

I mean really... Look at my screenname. ;)

The zionist owned entertainment industry HATES LIBERTARIAN ideals like the constitution etc. If they want to keep their record deal...they better be voting Obama. Why the heck do you think ALL of the hollywood/entertainment people HATE the republican party? or the Libertarian Party, or the COnstitution Party. It doesn't suit the agenda. Tones

Rush put out Snakes and Arrows, which definitely does not have a "Zionist" bent. Arcade Fire put out an album with a song that had the line "I don't want to fight in a holy war."

Then again, they're both Canadian. :D

HA! Any entertainer who would support the GOP or Ron Paul etc...would be right where Mel Gibson is today, and you better not admit you're a Christian either. Tones
