View Full Version : C.D. Jackson: An Important figure in Media History

C.D. Jackson, in my opinion, represents a significant figure in the history of corporate media merging with the state for purporsses of propagandizing the citizens of this nation. As we know the CIA was explicitly forbidden propaganizing its own people in the CIA's founding charter.

C.D. Jackson emerged as a key aid to Henry Luce's Time mag. network in the 1930s Then he became Ikes top aid in psychological warfare during WWII Then he took a similar position in the post war gov, with a newly created title that I have to get back to you on. Anyway, C.D. spent the 1950s ossilating back and forth between the govs top psy-warfare position and working directly for Henry Luces Time_life org. We now know how closely Luce worked with right wing Cubans to instigate and provoke Kennedy with actions that were never authorized by Kennedy even during the Cuban Missile Crisis!

Later guess who got control of the Zapruder film on behalf of Time-Life in Dallas. Why it was none other than C. D. Jackson. We need to do more reasearch into this character.
One recent text with a fair ammount on him is Total Cold War: Eisenhower's Secret Propaganda Battle at Home and Abroad by Kenneth Osgood.(University of Kansas Press, 2006)

I thought it might be worth taking a closer look at the man, C. D. Jackson, who purchased the Zapruder Film after the assassination of JFK.

Charles Douglas Jackson was born in New York City on 16th March 1902. After graduation from Princeton University in 1924, he joined the media industry. In 1931 he went to work with Henry Luce at Time Magazine. Influenced by the right-wing views of his employer, Jackson became President of the Council for Democracy.

During the Second World War Jackson served as special assistant to the Ambassador to Turkey before joining the OSS in 1943. The following year he was appointed Deputy Chief at the Psychological Warfare Division at Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF).

After the war, Jackson became Managing Director of Time-Life International. In 1948 Frank Wisner, who worked with Jackson in the OSS, was appointed as director of the Office of Special Projects. Soon afterwards it was renamed the Office of Policy Coordination (OPC). This became the espionage and counter-intelligence branch of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Wisner also established Operation Mockingbird, a program to influence the domestic American media. Wisner asked Philip Graham of the Washington Post to run the project within the newspaper industry. Jackson was also recruited and according to Deborah Davis (Katharine the Great): "By the early 1950s, Wisner 'owned' respected members of the New York Times, Newsweek, CBS and other communications vehicles."

Jackson became the publisher of Fortune Magazine and from 1951-52 he served as President of the Free Europe Committee. He also wrote speeches for Dwight Eisenhower during his presidential campaign. Jackson was rewarded in February 1953 by being appointed as Special Assistant to the President. This included the role of Eisenhower's liaison between the CIA and the Pentagon. According to the Eisenhower Library files in Abilene, Kansas, Jackson's "area responsibility was loosely defined as international affairs, cold war planning, and psychological warfare. His main function was the coordination of activities aimed at interpreting world situations to the best advantage of the United States and her allies and exploiting incidents which reflected negatively on the Soviet Union, Communist China and other enemies in the Cold War."

Jackson also took an active role in Operation Mockingbird. Documents released after his death show that Jackson was in contact with a CIA agent in Hollywood's Paramount Studios. This agent was involved in trying to influence the content of the films the company was making. The agent is not named by Jackson but Frances Stoner Saunders believes it was Carleton Alsop, a CIA agent employed by Frank Wisner. There is no doubt that Alsop was one of the CIA agents working at Paramount. However, Hugh Wilford argues that it was a senior executive at Paramount, Lugi G. Laraschi, was the most important CIA figure at the studio. Laraschi was the head of foreign and domestic censorship at the studio, whose job was to “iron out any political, moral or religious problems”. Other studios, including MGM and RKO, had similar officers, and were probably CIA placements. In a private letter to Sherman Adams, Jackson claims the role of these CIA placements was “to insert in their scripts and in their action the right ideas with the proper subtlety”.

In 1953 Jackson served on the Presidents' Committee on International Information Activities. The following year he was appointed as Special Assistant to President for International Affairs.

Jackson urged President Eisenhower to speak-out against Senator Joe McCarthy. He was probably influenced by McCarthy's attacks on CIA officials such as Frank Wisner and Cord Meyer. In Jackson's opinion McCarthy was damaging the anti-Communist cause with self serving and unstable behavior.

After the election of John F. Kennedy in 1960 Jackson left the White House and became publisher of Life Magazine. When Kennedy was assassinated, Jackson's Life Magazine purchased the Zapruder Film. Soon after the assassination they also successfully negotiated with Marina Oswald the exclusive rights to her story. This story never appeared in print. Jackson published individual frames of Zapruder's film but did not allow the film to be screened in its entirety.

Charles Douglas Jackson died on 18th September, 1964. On December 15, 1971, Jackson's widow gave his papers to the Dwight D. Eisenhower Library. These documents revealed that he had been working as a CIA agent since 1948.

According to Carl Bernstein, Jackson was "Henry Luce's personal emissary to the CIA". He also claimed that in the 1950s Jackson had arranged for CIA employees to travel with Time-Life credentials as cover. Does this include the CIA activities against Castro after the "Bay of Pigs".

David Lifton points out in The Great Zapruder Film Hoax (2004) that: "Abraham Zapruder in fact sold the film to Time-Life for the sum of $150,000 - about $900,000 dollars in today's money... Moreover, although Life had a copy of the film, it did little to maximize the return on its extraordinary investment. Specifically, it did not sell this unique property - as a film - to any broadcast media or permit it to be seen in motion, the logical way to maximize the financial return on its investment... A closer look revealed something else. The film wasn't just sold to Life - the person whose name was on the agreement was C. D. Jackson." Jackson published individual frames of Zapruder's film but did not allow the film to be screened in its entirety.

Soon after the assassination Jackson also successfully negotiated with Marina Oswald the exclusive rights to her story. Peter Dale Scott argues in his book Deep Politics and the Death of JFK (1996) that Jackson, on the urging of Allen Dulles, employed Isaac Don Levine, a veteran CIA publicist, to ghost-write Marina's story. Levine is an interesting figure. Born in Mozyr, Russia, Levine came to the United States in 1911. As a journalist he worked for The Kansas City Star, The New York Herald Tribune and The Chicago Daily News. In the 1930s he worked for the Hearst papers as a columnist. He edited the anti-communist magazine Plain Talk from 1946 till 1950, before joining the CIA front, Radio Free Europe. Levine also provided testimony to the House Un-American Activities Committee, in the case against Alger Hiss.

Here is this excerpt from Kenneth Osgood's Total Cold War: Eisenhower's Secret Prpaganda Battle at Home and Abroad (2006, University of Kansas
Press) ------

General eisenhower created a Psychological Warfare Branch (PWB) to particiapate in the Allied invasion of North Africa. The
PWB, a joint Anglo-American organization run by General robert McClure and C. D. Jakckson, began as a small outfit consisting
of some forty-seven journalists, advertising professionals, OWI and OSS recruits, and British officers. Apparent successes in
inducing enemy surreneders helped to win over formerly suspicious commanders, and by the end of the North African Campaign
the PWB had grown to nearly a thousand men. Psychological warfare planning was incresingly integrated with military operations
planning.(p. 31)

Osgood describes C.D. Jackson as in the "Rollback" camp re: Eastern Europe. Hence some writers seem to see a break in 1954 when
Nelson Rockefeller replaces C.D. Jackson; Rockefeller's main area of interest was Latin America. However, other writers emphasize more
continuity, noting that Neslon served as an advisor to Jackson and that the two were friends.

It should also be mentioned that Jackson worked for Henry Luce before WWII began, serving as Luce's first editor in charge of Life Magazine
in 1938, if memory serves.

Later Osgood, summs up Jackson's ties between the Eisenhower Admin. and the press:

Jackson's senior position in Luce's media empire provided the administration witha nother asset on the public relations front,
as eisenhower could count on Time-Life publications to sell his Cold War policies ot the American public and the wider
readership abroad. Jackson wrote dozens of letters to Luce, funneling behind-the -scenes details about the inner workings
of the administration and and peddling astory ideas that furhtered the intersts of the administration's Cold War priorirties. He
also maintained a broader network of contracts with journalists, adertisers, business leaders, and non-governmental organisations,
and he called on them repeatedly to contribute to his psychological wargare initiatives. Jackson remained in the WHite House
for just over a year before retruning to Time-Life--Henry Luce insisted that he return-- but he continued to advise the president
throughout Eisenhower's two terms, frequeantly frining off memos, cranking out ideas, and making suggestions for new psychological
warfare campaigns. (p.82-83)

Osgood describes Jackson as more of an "idea man" than Nelson Rockefeller, who put his poeple on it, all of them.

More to follow but on another note, has anyone heard of one of C.D. Jackson's proteges named Crhistian Ravndal, who became US ambassador
to Ecuador. Colby and Dennett describe him as a "top Cold War opperative" in their book Thy Will Be Done:" Radndalcame to Washington from
Eastern Europe in 1954 a the request of Nelson's friend and predecessor as presidential speacial assistant on Cold War Propaganda, C.D. Jackson.
Ravndal 'understands and uses psychological warfare better than practialy any other Ambassador I have ever met, ' said Jackson.
He has been particularly helfull to Radio Free Europe' Now he was being helpfull to Cam {Townsend, founder of Wycliffe Bible Translators].
Ravndal's brother led the successful fund drive that enabled JAARS to buy the Catalina amphibian" (p. 321, Thy Will Be Done:The Conquest of the Amazon: Neson Rockefeller and Evangelism In the Age of Oil)

Oh I forgot to mention, Jackson was a leader in the founding of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Let me also mention another book with perhaps the most stuff on C.D. Jackson, A Certain Arrogance:

Here is a review published by a citizen on Amazon. I have read this book and it is stunning.

George Michael Evica's
"A Certain Arrogance"

A Book Review
By Robert D. Morningstar
November 22, 2006

Oh, how terrible and barbarous are those Islamic Fundamentalists! How devious and demonic appear those Mullahs and Ayatollahs shown to us on CNN and Fox News each day and night, manipulating and perverting the religious teachings of a "religion of peace" to indoctrinate young minds towards self-destruction, suicide bombing and terrorism. How perverse of them it is to use religion as an excuse to attain political and military objectives. And, Oh, how much more moral are we than they! We, the self-righteous, morally and ethically "superior" Westerners who eschew such debased use of religious dogma as propaganda and mass mind-control tactics in the indoctrination of our own citizens.

"Not so!" might say Professor George Michael Evica, an outstanding and well-respected expert of JFK Assassination and US Intelligence History, through his riveting new book, entitled "A Certain Arrogance." In "A Certain Arrogance" (Iron Sights Press, 2006), Professor Evica reveals the history of the recruitment and indoctrination of US intelligence assets (spies/assassins) for OSS and CIA beginning during World War II when, through the work of OSS members Wild Bill Donovan and Allan Dulles, religious institutions, particularly, the Unitarian Church and the Quaker movement, were used as "fronts" in the selection and culling of candidates for espionage and special operations by America's intelligences services, OSS and CIA, domestically and abroad.

From OSS World War II operations in Switzerland to the Congo of the 1950s and 1960s to Patrice Lamumba University in Moscow, Evica takes the reader on a meticulously documented tour of international intrigues involved in the training of intelligence operatives through their education and indoctrination at various institutions run by religious organizations. Foremost among these in American intelligence gathering and special operations were the Unitarian Church and the Quakers. However, Evica shows us that these are not the same Quakers we think of when we remember the warmth and quiet courage of Gary Cooper and "Friendly Persuasion."

Professor Evica begins his chronicle of covert operations with the recruitment, education and indoctrination of Lee Harvey Oswald as began his peregrinations in 1958-59 toward his defection to Russia by passing through Switzerland's Albert Schweitzer College, where the CIA and FBI maintained contacts and operatives.

Evica chronicles the historic role of the Rockefeller clan in funding "missionary activities throughout the world" for intelligence gathering and suppression of undesirable activist social movements beginning in the early 188o's to gather intelligence information in order to quash American Indian activities in the West. Evica states:

"As early as 1883, the Rockefellers had `used [Christian] missionaries to gather intelligence about [Native American] insurgencies in the West or to discourage them.'
In the United States and later throughout Central and South America, Family Rockefeller power was linked to Christian missionary work."

The Rockefeller method of using Christian military activities in conjunction with financial power proved to be so successful in consolidating the Rockefeller Empire in the Americas that it was then employed in the Far East, in China, Korea, Philippines and Taiwan. By 1957, the Rockefellers had enlisted American Fundamentalist Revivalism as a national power base and put their support behind the evangelist, Billy Graham.

Evica's book takes the reader back and forth across continents and oceans both to the Far East, Korea and Nationalist Taiwan, and to Europe, but always after short side trips, Evica returns the travels of Lee Harvey Oswald as he made his way inevitably to Dallas, Texas and the site of the JFK Assassination.

Ruth and Michael Paine
A Quaker & A Unitarian
Lee Oswald's Dallas "Handlers"

Throughout his meandering journey, Oswald repeated encounters operatives of Unitarian, Quaker and Southern Baptist Fundamentalist missionary activities. For example, Oswald's "friends" and hosts in Dallas, Michael and Ruth Paine, who took Marina Oswald under her wing, were associated with both the Unitarian and the Quaker missionary movements. Evica suggests (as this writer has often asserted) that Michael Paine, "a physical Oswald double," may have acted in that capacity to bring attention in a negative way to Oswald's activities by setting up "political confrontations" at Southern Methodist University on Sundays after attending as "a communicant at a `nearby' Unitarian Church."

The religious intrigues surrounding the life and death of Lee Harvey Oswald, as detailed and documented by Evica in this masterful work, shed a disturbing light on the events in Dallas on November 22, 1963 and suggest an almost direct link to current history-altering and world-shaping national and international events in which our nation is today engaged (although "embroiled" may be a more appropriate term).

The importance of this work is self-evident and shows that the JFK Assassination is as important today as on the day it happened, exactly 43 years ago today (I chose to compose on this day intentionally for this reason). George Michael Evica's close friend and research associate for many years, Charles Drago, writes in his eloquent introduction to "A Certain Arrogance":

"A Certain Arrogance stands as Professor Evica's response to the unavoidable question:
How do we define and effect justice in the wake of the world-historic tragedy in Dallas?
Clearly he understands that, at this late date, being content merely to identify and, if possible, prosecute the conspiracy's facilitators and mechanics would amount to hollow acts of vengeance. Cleaning and closing the wound while leaving the disease to spread is simply not an option." Mr. Drago goes on to make analogy between the JFK Assassination and a cancer that continues to spread through our government and contaminates and taints our history.

From this short and eloquent diagnosis, current events clearly demonstrate that "the cancer" which infected government policy and national politics that day in Dallas, November 22nd, 1963 still persists, continues to grow in virulence and has created an all too patient but sick nation. The question remains "What is the remedy that will rid us of the cancer but not kill the patient?" This reviewer's response is:

The remedy that will heal the nation and stop the cancer from spreading any farther is achieving "Justice for JFK."

I recommend "A Certain Arrogance" to all those good citizens who are interested in recovering our national security from the Machiavellian manipulation of misguided patriots and religious fanatics who at the core are not dissimilar in credo, strategy and tactics from those same terrorists from whom they pretend to defend us.
