yeah, I caught it also...One of the online questions was "With Hurricane Ike hitting Ron Paul's district, do you think he will stick to his anarcho-capitalism and refuse federal aid". paraphrased Lib lady quickly speaks up saying "He says they'll take their guns"... The repub says "RP is consistent and sticks it to both the Democrat and Republican machine... But will say if disaster relief comes to the district, it was their money in the first place." ;)

Hi,

In light of the hurricane, will Congressman Paul acquired federal funds for his district? Or can States take care of this sort of thing?

Thanks.

Sincerely,
Omphfullas Zamboni

I'd say Ron will continue with his past ideas on this. Like he is in principle against the out of control earmark spending, he puts them in there to get money back for his district.

I believe last time his rationale was that people paid into it, they should receive all the benefits of paying their taxes that others receive and that includes foreign aid for disasters. Kind of a, "I wish we weren't even in this situation, but since we're here...."

Texas could handle it without Federal assistance. Galveston was destroyed in 1900 and they rebuilt it without Federal help. I'm sure we'll get their "help" this time regardless of what we want.

of course...while the Fed is trying to figure out a way to bailout Lehman, I'm pretty sure they could help 'bailout' Galveston after the storm.

For some reason, it has a better feel to it than "Republican".

Anyway, HBO hasn't added it yet. They do have last Friday's 'Overtime,' though.

LOL...so that was the lady's name that gave me an ear ache ;)

Salman Rushdie seemed the most sensible on that panel esp. when he pointed out the bailouts as an afront on the idea of free markets/capitalism, calling them a huge example of socialism in the US.

She was good at taking on the Fox News talking heads when everyone was beating the war drums for Iraq.

i really don't like Bill Maher that much anymore. He just uses Ron Paul to poke fun at the republicans.

Typical Bill Maher: Hey look my fellow liberals here is a republican against the illegal iraq war. You and my liberal idol Obama have a lot in common. What? you wouldn't invade the sovereign nation of Pakistan without a declaration of war? Well your just crazy thats why you will never be president like Obama.

Liberals like him are hypocrites.

Plus I remember him getting pissed off at Ron Paul for saying he would not go to war for Israel.

That never happened...

You might be thinking of when he disagreed with Michael Sheuher who said, "Israel is not worth a single American life or dollar."

Yeah you're right, I forgot it was Sheuher. Same difference.

Actually, more precisely, he is against spending in general, especially if it's not constitutional. But rest I agree with, as long as the system is flawed, and his constituents are paying into the system, then there should be a fair share of funds returned to his district.

I bet RP is a closet ancap. I mean, think about it. He loves Austrian economics, and they're all ancap. He loves Lew Rockwell's site, and he's an ancap. So he must be at least pretty close. I'm sure he's given it a lot of thought. Although I don't know any ancaps that are comfortable working from inside the system.

It's the elephant in the room, but it's not necessary to dissect Ron Paul's beliefs.

What is important, is what people choose to believe for themselves. Treating Paul like a celeb or cult of personality diminishes the freedom message.
