Congressional candidate Colleen Callahan would consider reinstating the draft to build up America’s military, and she also backs mandatory national service — military or non-military — for all.
A draft, Callahan said Thursday, would be “the fairest way to rebuild our military” at a time when National Guard members “are doing multiple tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
“We find ourselves at risk domestically when we have needs for our National Guard, because equipment and those who serve ... are not here,” Callahan said. “It is the National Guard, after all — not the international guard.”
Callahan, a Democrat from Kickapoo, first brought up the issue of possibly reinstituting the draft at a forum in Peoria on Wednesday, where she appeared with the other two candidates for the 18th Congressional District U.S. House seat — state Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Peoria, and Green Party candidate Sheldon Schafer, also of Peoria.
