i attempted to post this on the CNN Blog: (with regard to the National service forum on CNN)

the taxi driver, the coal miner, the night clerk at 7-11 also risk their lives every day, as do many others. this idea that government work (police, fireman, teacher ) is more noble than the private sector is sickening.



it seems it did not pass the moderators approval, although it may still show up

I agree. Take almost anybody from Dirty Jobs and they put themselves in harms way every single day with probably a fraction of the recognition.

Maybe they have a lame moderation department. It's very innocuous.

There was an item on the California ballot a few years back to give harsher penalties to cop killers, than killers of regular civilians. I voted "NO" enthusiastically. I don't remember if it passed. Their pay and benefits should equal the risk factor. The way that local police are allowing themselves to be federalized against the citizens is sickening. Cops lives are no more valuable than others.
