Expanding our domestic production of oil and natural gas will not change the price we pay at the pump. We don't have enough to be able to effect the global price of oil. Our production has been in decline since the 1970's and that is not because we don't want to pump it out. It is because we have already pumped out most of what we have. Increasing exploration (which would still take years to come online into actual usable oil) may offset some of the declines, but again will never be enough to lower the global price of oil. Our proven reserves (including those currently untapped) are equal to about three years of our current annual consumption- an amount less than three percent of global resources.
